Silicon Graphics O2

I was wondering what the best OS to run on the SGI O2 would be, I have read that Gentoo is not quite ready yet in this thread:

Would this be a good chance for me to learn about netbsd or freebsd? Or will they also be only partially functional and I should just try to get my hands on IRIX? How difficult would it be to work towards getting Gentoo working on this (R5K), and who is working on it currently?
