I keep getting the the same error over and over again. on my new Gentoo install. I am not very netweork savy so bear with me here.
I should be running dhcp, so i set up my /etc/conf.d/net so it says iface_eth0="dhcp"
but I keep getting the same error.
(first it hangs at "Bringing eth0 up....", forever)
Failed to bring eth0 up
Error: Problem starting needed services
"netmount" was not started
When i installed all i had to do is run dhcpcd eth0 and it ifconfig -a said it was up and running. I do the same not iw hangs for a while and brings m back to the command prompt and I dont get up and running on eth0
side note. I had to do a "alternate install" because my motherboard kept going into standy and not waking up. during this process, per instructions i started at step 7. so it never had loaded the natsemi module. I got around this by booting from the cd and copying the module to the appropriate library, and it loaded the module fine after that. Could this be causing the problem?
I couldnt find anything on the Gentoo website, I figure that is because most people arent this network stupid. |

When you compiled your kernel (which I'm assuming you did) did you remember to include the appropriate module for you network card? |

I see it in there ...
At least in the gentoo-r9 version of the kernel
CONFIG_NATSEMI |

One my 2.4.19-gentoo-r7, it is under Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit) here:
Code: |
< > Myson MTD-8xx PCI Ethernet support
< > National Semiconductor DP8381x series PCI Ethernet support <--- here
<> PCI NE2000 and clones support (see help)

Also, you can just edit the .config file and look for kernel config. options. You would have probably seen CONFIG_NATSEMI in there. |
