this is the 3rd time I try to compile X
I'm doing a fresh install. Since i'm on dialup, I?m doing the installation from stage 3 with debian as a host. Following the advice on the tips forum, I mounted, chrooted, etc.
Then emerge rsync to actualize the database

afterwards emerge -f x11-base/xfree
which downloads X420src-1.tgz, X420src-2.tgz, X420src-3.tgz
corresponding to
xfree-4.2.0-r12
next morning I do emerge x11-base/xfree to build the source downloaded last night
and after almost an hour, it crash and burns with segment violation. I tried 3 times, and always at the same place.
I even deleted the source, redid emrge rsync, redownloaded the packages, and after another night of dload, I run emerge t ocompile X nad the same error.

Here are the last lines I get. Am I missing a dependency or something? since emerge --pretend tells me I shouldn't need any.

The four times I tried, one after refetching the packages, the crash is always at the same point. Perhaps there's something wrong on -r12. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I had a same problem and it turned out to be bad memory module. I could compile smaller packages, but not anything big like X. emerge memtest and test your memory. For more info on this look at the last post in this thread https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=10401&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=25

Also see this thread for another approach to RAM testing.
