Hi,
My new Acer Aspire E 17 Laptop works perfectly with Ubuntu 14.10 and 14.04.02. The Touch Pad Synaptic is working and the sound also play on both internal speakers and HDMI on my surround sound system. But, Ubuntu restart sometime for no reason! I thought I had a hardware problem but no...
And I am in love with Gentoo so I want to hardcode all drivers into the Kernel. Everything is done and works fine except the Touch Pad and the sound :(

It has been two weeks since I am working on this, read everything I found on the subject: Alsa, GStreamer backend, etc...
I need help!
Here is a portion of my dmesg regarding specific data:
First, the kernel errors output:
Code: |

Does passing "model=acer-aspire" to the snd-hda-intel module help?
Code: | # tail -n1 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire |
For this to work, it has to be a module, though.
If you are building it into the kernel, maybe it it will work by passing it via the bootloader kernel line. |

Yves Boisjoly,
It can all be made to work built into the kernel but you are going te need some trial and error.
You have several issues of varing severity. Its best to work on one at a time.
Heres a quick overview.
dmesg: | EXT3-fs (sda4): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
EXT2-fs (sda4): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240) |
These messages are informational and are not really errors. If they annoy you add rootfs=ext4 to your kernel command line.
That prevents the kernel trying ext3 and ext2 before ext4.
dmesg: | usb 4-1.4: Direct firmware load for ar3k/AthrBT_0x31010000.dfu failed with error -2 |
Either make both the driver and firmware outside or inside the kernel.
With alsa built into the kernel, /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf is not consulted as it cannot be read when alsa is loaded.
Your first sound card is the digital output on your video card.
The second card is the analogue card where your speakers are attached.
By default, your sounds will all go to your video card which is probably not what you want.
Thats one fix, one strong hint and I'm not sure what you want to do with sound. It probably works as is, just not the way you want it to.
Oh, to help us to help you, make friends with wgetpaste.
In the passing, dmesg: | [ 0.427612] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs | usbfs has been depreciated for several years.
You should not need it. Its not wrong, just no longer used. _________________ Regards,

Thank's to both of you...
I was finally able to get ride of some error messages, but even after having added the "rootfs=ext4", the messages are still there. But it doesn't bother me...
Code: |
Defiant ~ # dmesg -t | grep -i 'error\|warn\|exception'
ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, While evaluating Sleep State [\_S1_] (20140926/hwxface-580)
ACPI Exception: AE_NOT_FOUND, While evaluating Sleep State [\_S2_] (20140926/hwxface-580)
EXT3-fs (sda4): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
EXT2-fs (sda4): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
|
I also add some little stuff into the kernel just for trying and a couple of new lines appears, successfully...
Thank's for the wgetpaste hint... Here is my dmesg output:

I found my error!
After having read on the subject, I realized that the sound would probably goes to the default output card id 0. While the analog output is on the card id 1. I tried to modify the order of the default card id with this .asound file:
Code: |
~ $ cat .asoundrc
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
|
The music play and Opera play also!!
Thanks anyway _________________ Acer Aspire E5-721/EA70_BE , BIOS V1.06 06/05/2014

@VoidMage,
If you referring to the .asound file content, I'll say:
First, it fixed my problem
Second, it seams to have fix a lot of others problem on the Internet!
In my case, most of the time I am using my computer alone. I created two scripts: 0_Internal _speakers.sh, 1_HDMI_speakers.sh. Then I created two .asound.0 and .asound.1 configurion files, respectively to point the Generic_1 and the Generic audio cards. The scripts simply delete my link .asound that point to the last session .asound.(0 or 1) file respectively, and create a new link to my new desired situation!
If I want to connect my computer to my Audio surround sound system and the big screen via HDMI, I run the appropriate script. When done, I run the counterpart script. Easy, simple, efficient!
Of course I could have make the scripts modify the Generic and Generic_1 link under the /proc directory, but I am running my desktop as non-root...

Again, due to massive cargo-culting it's hard to come up with a good site, but google 'defaults.pcm.card defaults.pcm.device defaults.ctl.card'. |
