I had similar problem. I solved it by emerging ~x86 virtual/ffmpeg.

In ffmpeg-9-r1.ebuild
Code:

RDEPEND="
        || (
                >=media-video/libav-9.12[${MULTILIB_USEDEP},X?,encode?,gsm?,jpeg2k?,mp3?,opus?,sdl?,speex?,theora?,threads?,truetype?,vaapi?,vdpau?,x264?]
                >=media-video/ffmpeg-1.2.6-r1:0[${MULTILIB_USEDEP},X?,encode?,gsm?,jpeg2k?,mp3?,opus?,sdl?,speex?,theora?,threads?,truetype?,vaapi?,vdpau?,x264?]
        )
"

libav comes first and can be selected regardless of the libav use flag.

It was fixed in fmpeg-9-r2.ebuild
Code:

RDEPEND="
        libav? ( >=media-video/libav-9.12[${MULTILIB_USEDEP},X?,encode?,gsm?,jpeg2k?,mp3?,opus?,sdl?,speex?,theora?,threads?,truetype?,vaapi?,vdpau?,x264?] )
        !libav? ( >=media-video/ffmpeg-1.2.6-r1:0[${MULTILIB_USEDEP},X?,encode?,gsm?,jpeg2k?,mp3?,opus?,sdl?,speex?,theora?,threads?,truetype?,vaapi?,vdpau?,x264?] )
"

USE += "ffmpeg -libav"

you need to set ffmpeg USE flag for "media support" you need to unset libav TO force ffmpeg to be used

The issue is just same as on first post. I didn't edit make.conf and didn't change USE, ffmpeg -libav it's my current settings.

Mask media-libs/libav and media-libs/libpostproc. If you're on ~arch then USE=-libav should be enough, but that hasn't trickled down to stable yet.

I've update to virtual/fmpeg-9-r2, but:
Code:
# equery d media-libs/libpostproc
 * These packages depend on media-libs/libpostproc:
app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-medialibs-20140508-r6 (abi_x86_32 ? >=media-libs/libpostproc-10.20140517-r1[abi_x86_32(-)])

media-video/mplayer2-2.0_p20131009 (postproc ? media-libs/libpostproc)
media-video/mpv-0.3.10 (postproc ? media-libs/libpostproc)
media-video/vlc-2.1.2 (postproc ? media-libs/libpostproc:0)

So should I remove USE=postproc and mask media-libs/libpostproc? But what's about emul-linux.. and gst-plugins.. packages, they depend on libpostproc!

with masked libpostproc emerge world is the same:
Code:
emerge -pvNDu --with-bdeps=y @world                                                                                                                  [35/1837]

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Did you set the encode and threads useflags for media-video/ffmpeg?

For some reason i have USE=threads set in make.conf, don't remember why I set it. Do you suggest disable it? But as you can see encode isn't set.
Code:
# grep encode /etc/portage/package.*
# grep encode /etc/portage/make.conf
# grep threads /etc/portage/package.*
# grep threads /etc/portage/make.conf
USE="-java -java6 -gnome -kde -qt4 -qt3support -pulseaudio -xscreensaver -libav ffmpeg jpeg2k raw wmf cddb quicktime lame gstreamer matroska vim-syntax bash-completion xcomposite icu xpm threads smp sse sse2 sse3 ssse3 mmx mmxext djvu upnp samba orc xinerama fbcon directfb v4l fontconfig nls pam gnome-keyring multilib zeroconf avahi consolekit"

Code:
# eselect profile show
Current /etc/portage/make.profile symlink:
  default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop

emc: Try doing
Code:
emerge -1a mplayer2 mpv
by it's self, to recompile mplayer2 and mpv so that it is updated to not use libav. I think you are encountering where portage is seeing those 2 packages was installed with some old USE flags and haven't been updated to use the new ones.

Code:
emerge -1a mplayer2 mpv
by it's self, to recompile mplayer2 and mpv so that it is updated to not use libav. I think you are encountering where portage is seeing those 2 packages was installed with some old USE flags and haven't been updated to use the new ones.

OK so what I did I delete threads USE flag from make.conf and now my ffmpeg (media-video and virual) are merged with:
Code:

[I] media-video/ffmpeg
     Installed versions:  1.2.6-r1(11:50:03 PM 03/02/2015)(X aac alsa bzip2 encode fontconfig hardcoded-tables iconv jpeg2k mp3 network sdl threads truetype v4l vorbis x264 xvid zlib -aacplus -altivec -amr -bindist -bluray -cdio -celt -cpudetection -debug -doc -examples -faac -fdk -flite -frei0r -gnutls -gsm -iec61883 -ieee1394 -jack -libass -libcaca -libsoxr -libv4l -modplug -neon -openal -openssl -opus -oss -pic -pulseaudio -rtmp -schroedinger -speex -static-libs -test -theora -twolame -vaapi -vdpau -vis -vpx ABI_MIPS="-n32 -n64 -o32" ABI_PPC="-32 -64" ABI_S390="-32 -64" ABI_X86="64 -32 -x32" CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx -3dnow -3dnowext -avx -mmxext -ssse3" FFTOOLS="aviocat cws2fws ffescape ffeval fourcc2pixfmt graph2dot ismindex pktdumper qt-faststart trasher")

[I] virtual/ffmpeg
     Installed versions:  9-r2(11:51:26 PM 03/02/2015)(X encode jpeg2k mp3 sdl threads truetype x264 -gsm -libav -opus -speex -theora -vaapi -vdpau ABI_MIPS="-n32 -n64 -o32" ABI_PPC="-32 -64" ABI_S390="-32 -64" ABI_X86="64 -32 -x32")

Due to conflict from my previous post iIhad to add threads USE flag to ffmpeg in packages.use (btw strange USE flags form virual are not propaget to actual ffmpeg implementtion , in this case of course media-video/ffmpeg)
Code:
$ grep ffmpeg /etc/portage/package.use
virtual/ffmpeg threads
media-video/ffmpeg threads

And now when I run:
Code:
# emerge -1pvN virtual/ffmpeg media-video/ffmpeg mplayer2 mpv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Which is quite understandable since nothing has changes in USE flags settings
