Hi there.
Im trying to find an OS that is just working on a SGI Prism Deskside.
I tried several different linux distris, all fail at some point.
Because i already got gentoo on my server working nicely, i gave it a try after red hate and suse failed.
Booting with the live cd takes a very long time, but at least it is working.
But after installing, trying to boot, it fails at the boot prompt:
Code: | ELILO boot: Uncompressing Linux... gzip.c(line 602):gzip_ia64 : invalid compressed format (err=1)
Start of gentoo failed: Load Error
Paused - press any key to continue |
What can i do to get it running? (apart from becoming a kernel hacker) |

May need to file a bug on this, not sure how much bit rusting has occurred on ia64.
I haven't run my ia64 box in a year after X11 broke, I'll need to do so sometime...
In the meantime, you can try older kernels and older gcc to see if it will at least build properly. IIRC I had 3.6 working with gcc 4.6.3... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Uhh, with this "build an old kernel and see" im overstrained. Im not that linux user/hacker to get this done.
What i wanted to do is to try different gentoo releases to see if it works.
I loaded the 2008 minimal livecd to see if it works. It boots quick and nice, but doesnt see my HD. No /dev/sda there, and i dont have a clue.
It loaded the module for the SGI IO4 card which has the sata connectors on it, and also the cdrom drive.
The cdrom is seen, but the HD not.
Now i wanted to try a newer release, but im too stupid to find one. There is no gentoo 10, 11 or 12 ia64 archive/iso/stage3/whatever. |

Oh wait, so the recent livecd/mini-installer CD does boot however, just your self built kernel (part of the Gentoo install process so I'm confused...)? Something is really wrong there then... If you swiped the kernel and modules from the livecd and used that for your HDD, it would work?
Unfortunately I don't know much about SGI hardware. I own one of the whitebox OEM Intel machines (Dell Poweredge 3250, 2x1.3GHz Madisons, U2W HDDs), and even that, the old Gentoo LiveCD doesn't support the CDROM drive due to the ICH4 being wonky on the platform. The boot sequence of the PE3250's firmware is slloowww but once the kernel loads it's pretty quick.
I'd imagine SuSE have best support but not sure what they're up to now... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

I confused some things with my linux experiments, it took me some time to figure out the following:
I already got a suse/redhat installation on the hd i got in the machine while trying to boot/install gentoo.
My boot process on gentoo fails at some point where it doesnt find the cd anymore, and says "could not find root (or realroot)"
I then gave it /dev/sda3 as root.
It then loaded the installed linux, either red hat or suse (they were the only ones to boot/install, but they fail with the gzip error afterwards).
I now need to figure out how to get gentoo booted without cd-rom...
The best would be if i could use a hdd to get the contents of the cdrom on it.

Ok, i extracted the stage3 tarball directly on /dev/sda3 and it booted after a while.
I now got into the livecd prompt, but its exremely unresponsive. Commands take around 30 secs to get executed.
It has network connection and can ping other hosts on the net, but cant be reached from the net. |
