Hello I was wondering what is the best way to automatically mount things in Gentoo? It looks like the choices are udisks or autofs. autofs uses the kernel automounter and udisks uses dbus. Are there any reasons to choose one over the other? |

It's up to you. It depends on what kind of user interface you expect, I suspect the dbus method is more pleasant to the desktop environment user as it was designed from the ground up for that purpose so it will show your disks when plugged in, and removed when you unplug. Automount/autofs I feel is more for NFS but it works for both.
If you install a DE with udisks/dbus support automount tends to be set up for you. Autofs for disks requires a little configuration, but I think autofs is more for devices that are rarely removed/inserted on the system (used for a long period of time, known origin/destinations.) udisks is more for when you don't necessarily know much about the media being inserted, other than being on the console somewhere. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

I am using LXDE. I will look into how it works with udisks if at all. |

The file manager for LXDE (pcmanfm?) looks like it should report udisks, so it should work fine if it was built properly.
I've used udisks with XFCE/thunar and Gnome/nautilus, they work very well, saves a lot of effort for single user machines. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Oh wow. I didn't realize that. I was trying to open a win95 cd and it wasn't working. The cd works it just isn't getting mounted for some reason. |
