Since an upgrade earlier today, I can't get my window manager, kdm, running.

/etc/init.d/xdm restart only causes a quick flicker on the screen, but it does not start.

An inspection of /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows the first line that indicates something might be going wrong is:

In a properly-functioning system, it's:

The versions of the 2 most-likely culprits, xf86-video-intel and xorg-server, were both the same before and after the issue occurred.

Problem solved! The correct log file to look in was kdm.log, not Xorg.0.log.

/var/log/kdm.log
Quote:

...
Initializing built-in extension XFree86-DRI
Initializing built-in extension DRI2
Loading extension GLX
assertion failed on line 187 of file /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/freetype-2.5.4-r1/work/freetype-2.5.4/src/cff/cf2intrp.c
(EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

This assertion caused the freetype library to crash and therefore kdm infrastructure that depended on it.

The reason it stopped kdm is that I had enabled the debug use flag for the freetype library (I've done some development based on it in the past)

The fix:

edit /etc/portage/package.use:
Quote:
media-libs/freetype -debug

(or just remove the debug flag, since I believe it is off by default)

By the way, the assert in the freetype library appears to be triggered by using an obscure, non-standard font for my KDE menus, Mirage Gothic. The freetype libraries started choking on this font and the assert prevented KDE from loading.
