my root partition is luks encrypted. I have been using a default genkernel configuration with --lvm --luks. the system had seen many reboots, however after the latest boot, I was unable to unlock the partition. the keyboard works in the grub menu and as well as in a chroot environment.I don't know what had changed. I urgently need use of the machine and don't want to backup/restore onto an unencrypted drive if I don't have to. any suggestions are welcome. thanks.

Possibly the keymap... not the keyboard. Try building genkernel with `--keymap' and then append `keymap=<KEYMAP>' accordingly when rebooting.

EDIT: Beware of the keyboard kernel module! Should be built in the kernel or genkernel should handle kernel module. (I am not familiar with genkernel... so leaving the hot potato to you, of course.)

thank you for the reply. that sounds sensible-- when I used Arch, I would have to add early keyboard functionality to initcpio. alas, I backed up the partition, removed luks, and restored. I had no real use for luks anyway. but thank you. Gentoo rocks.
