I have tried to enable cmus to play wma files by enabling use wma . here is the emerging info.

Code:

ae429-1105 chenming # emerge -av cmus

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] media-sound/cmus-2.5.0-r1  USE="aac alsa flac mad mikmod mp4 pulseaudio unicode vorbis wma* -ao -cddb -cdio -cue -debug -discid -examples -modplug -musepack -oss -pidgin -wavpack -zsh-completion" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] yes
>>> Verifying ebuild manifests
>>> Emerging (1 of 1) media-sound/cmus-2.5.0-r1::gentoo
>>> Installing (1 of 1) media-sound/cmus-2.5.0-r1::gentoo
>>> Jobs: 1 of 1 complete                           Load avg: 0.98, 0.57, 0.52
>>> Auto-cleaning packages...

when i tried to play wma files, A huge amount of white noise coming along with the music.

Do you know how to resolve this issue?

there are also people having the same issue (1) http://www.shuangrimu.com/25/ (2) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146556, but i wish to fix this directly using emerge rather than compiling using make.
Thanks,

diablo465 ...

I don't have a .wma file with which to test but this would seem to me an issue related to whatever is providing 'ffmpeg' (so libav or ffmpeg). This is somewhat confimed by the debian user linked above:

After some searching it looked like these were both provided by ffmpeg and apparently libavcodec-dev wasn’t enough. Unfortunately due to a split within the ffmpeg community into ffmpeg and libav, Debian only has the libav files, while cmus relies on the ffmpeg library files.

... so which do you have?

Hi khayyam, thanks for the reply.
it is caused by ffmpeg apparantly:
Code:

ae429-1105 chenming # emerge -av libav

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N     ] media-video/libav-9.17:0/9  USE="X aac alsa bzip2 encode gpl hardcoded-tables jpeg2k mp3 network pulseaudio sdl ssl theora truetype vorbis x264 xvid zlib (-altivec) -amr -bindist -cdio -cpudetection -custom-cflags -debug -doc -faac -fdk -frei0r -gsm -ieee1394 -jack (-neon) -openssl -opus -oss -pic -rtmp -schroedinger -speex -static-libs {-test} -threads -tools -v4l -vaapi -vdpau (-vis) -vpx" ABI_X86="(64) (-32) (-x32)" CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx -3dnow -3dnowext -avx -mmxext -ssse3" 3,985 KiB
[blocks B      ] media-video/ffmpeg:0 ("media-video/ffmpeg:0" is blocking media-video/libav-9.17)

Total: 1 package (1 new), Size of downloads: 3,985 KiB
Conflict: 1 block (1 unsatisfied)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

  (media-video/ffmpeg-1.2.6-r1:0/0::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    media-video/ffmpeg required by @selected

  (media-video/libav-9.17:0/9::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    libav

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

but i am not sure what do i miss in ffmpeg.

diablo465 ... I'm not so sure, the above debian user had this issue and debian uses libav, their solution was to build the ffmpeg.so with ffmpeg. However, as you have media-video/ffmpeg-1.2.6-r1 installed then your issue may be due to the fact that this version is now over two years behind the current ffmpeg release. You can try keywording 2.5.4 ... and then rebuild cmus.

HTH & best ... khay

I have upgraded ffmpeg to newest version:
Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
... done!
[ebuild   R   ~] media-video/ffmpeg-2.5.4:0/54.56.56  USE="X aac alsa bzip2 encode hardcoded-tables iconv jpeg2k mp3 network opengl pic pulseaudio sdl truetype vorbis x264 xcb xvid zlib -aacplus (-altivec) -amr -amrenc (-armv5te) (-armv6) (-armv6t2) (-armvfp) -bindist -bluray -bs2b -cdio -celt -cpudetection -debug -doc -examples -faac -fdk -flite -fontconfig -frei0r -fribidi -gme -gnutls -gsm -iec61883 -ieee1394 -jack -ladspa -libass -libcaca -libsoxr -libv4l -lzma (-mips32r2) (-mipsdspr1) (-mipsdspr2) (-mipsfpu) -modplug (-neon) -openal -openssl -opus -oss -quvi -rtmp -samba -schroedinger -speex -ssh -static-libs {-test} -theora -threads -twolame -v4l -vaapi -vdpau -vpx -wavpack -webp -x265 -zvbi" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx sse sse2 -3dnow -3dnowext -avx -avx2 -fma3 -fma4 -mmxext -sse3 -sse4_1 -sse4_2 -ssse3 -xop" FFTOOLS="aviocat cws2fws ffescape ffeval ffhash fourcc2pixfmt graph2dot ismindex pktdumper qt-faststart trasher" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

and reinstalled cmus. after that, I have executed emerge @preserved-rebuild

then when I run wma file, it says:

.wma': unrecognized filename extension
