Hello,
It seems that I am unable to get root permissions and because of that I can't use emerge to install any other stuff that I need.
I found out that I can't switch to superuser with the su command because my one and only user account isn't in the wheel group. The problem there is that only root seems to be able to add him to the group and, unfortunately, I don't know how I can get any form of root access.
I'm using KDE and I've found the /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc file, but, as you can guess, I don't have permission to alter it to enable logging in as root.
KDE starts up automatically when the OS is booting so I really don't have any other idea what to do.
I am running Gentoo in VMware Player.
I am sorry if this question was answered elsewhere, I tried my best to search through related topics and did a lot of searching on google, but mostly people solve this issue by adding the user to the wheel group, which I am unable to do at the moment.
Could anyone please help me out a bit with this? Any form of help will be appreciated. |

just alter the /etc/shadow file with a password of your choice.
though vmware is different as phyisical drive but should be also possible. |

Just login as root from a text console and change the group membership in the normal fashion: | Code: | | usermod -a -G wheel myusername |

When I try to open that file i get "Permission denied". I am not sure why I need to alter passwords, I know them, it's just that "su" isn't working because I can't add the user to the "wheel" group :/ |

I've found how to change group memberships using gpasswd or usermod, but logging in as root is what is troubling me at the moment. KDE doesn't allow me to log in as root into it, and KDE starts up automatically as the system boots so it seems that I have to somehow gain access though it. |

Thank you very much, that did the trick!
Sorry for asking such a dumb question, it's my first time using Gentoo so I'm still a bit lost. |
