This is odd, but I can only play MP4 files in Kaffeine and then it has a big, green, horizontal bar at the bottom of the video. I cannot play MP4 in VLC or Dragon. I have ffmpeg and x264 stuff installed, so this has me. What information do you need and what can I do to get MP4 working?

The last 100 lines from my xsession-errors file:

Anybody? I have what I thought were the required libs installed. In fact, they were pulled automatically. Here's my USE flags.
Code:

USE="X a52 aac acl acpi alsa amd64 audiofile avahi bash-completion bcmath berkdb bindist bluetooth branding bzip2 cairo cdda cddb cdparanoia cdr cli consolekit cracklib crypt css cups cxx dbus declarative dga dri dts dv dvb dvd dvdr emboss encode exif fam ffmpeg firefox flac foomaticdb fortran ftp gdbm gif gimp glamor glut gnutls gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gzip hddtemp iconv ieee1394 imap inifile inotify ipv6 jpeg jpeg2k kde kerberos kipi lame lcms ldap libnotify libsamplerate lm_sensors lzma lzo mad matroska matrox mbox mikmod mmx mng modplug modules mp3 mp4 mpeg mplayer multilib musepack ncurses networkmanager nls nptl odbc ogg openal opengl openmp pam pango pcmcia pcre pda pdf phonon plasma png policykit posix postscript ppds qt3support qt4 quicktime raw rdesktop readline recode samba scanner sdl semantic-desktop session sharedmem smartcard smp sndfile snmp sockets sound speex spell sse sse2 sse4_1 ssl ssse3 startup-notification svg syslog taglib tcpd theora threads tiff truetype udev udisks unicode upower usb v4l vaapi vcd vdpau vnc vorbis wifi wxwidgets x264 xattr xcb xcomposite xft xine xinerama xml xosd xpm xscreensaver xv xvid zlib"

This is using the KDE profile. Things have worked well up to this point, but again, only Kaffeine can play MP4, and it has a green line at the bottom.

So does it play with ffplay? ffplay is the built-in player of ffmpeg.

I will try ffplay now.

*UPDATE*

Using ffplay ./HDV0002.MP4 results in perfect video, no green line. Basically I want to splice some clips together in KDEnlive and upload the resulting video to YouTube. However, all my players SHOULD play this. I find it odd nothing is working except Kaffeine.

Good to know. For getting help with your broken players, you'd better adjust the topic.

To what? These players do work in Debian with the same files, so I am assuming the issue is with my setup for MP4 playback in Gentoo.

Didn't you say "Using ffplay ./HDV0002.MP4 results in perfect video, "?
So I understand your problem is not MP4 but your setup of your media players, somewhat like "xine fails with mp3".

I see your point. It is odd though because I thought these players called ffmpeg. Odd that it plays fine, yet the desktop players won't play at all or with that green line.

Not sure if it would yield any useful information, but you could try this command and show us your pastebin of its output.

When running that I saw nothing odd in the log, but I got a segfault. Here's the log though.

I have been digging and found more info. Apparently it is having issues with QT4?

*UPDATE*

I rebuilt VLC and still have the exact same issue. Not sure what is going on here.

*UPDATE*

I disabled hardware acceleration in VLC and it now works perfectly. The question is, why isn't hardware acceleration working? I have VAAPI and VDPAU installed and the USE flags are set globally.

Alright, this is odd. I reset all player to default by deleting their configuration files. I started VLC. Would not play my files. Disabled hardware accel. Played my file. Enabled hardware accel, now it, and others, all play my files with hardware support. This leads me to believe that some library had to play a file once to store some setting before it would work in hardware. Now all players play correctly EXCEPT Kaffeine, which still has the green line at the bottom of the page. Strange, but it works now, even if I delete the player configurations again and again. Some library needed something set. What it was I will never know.

If you're wondering, I have since edited the files together, threw in some basic effects, and uploaded the final cut to YouTube.
