Not sure if you actually tried hooking up extra per-disk SATA activity lights before, but the main trick is that it becomes necessary to tap off of the power connector for the activity signal, which doesn't exist on the power connectors that I have...
Need to buy special SATA power connectors where I can tap this signal, then it'd become really easy to get that fifth activity light.
PATA is fairly easy though not necessarily independent (with some circuitry it can be, by separating the open collector outputs... and then again once they have independent lights, no need for the aggregate light on the motherboard.) You can swipe the signal off of the 40-pin connector which is a lot easier than missing pins on the sata power connector.
Speaking of RAIDs, I had one of my disks have sectors become unreadable. MD kicked the 500G disk and silently incorporated the hot spare, I didn't really notice anything except the massive disk transfers slowed down the machine (argh. need to make sure md sends me mail when stuff like this happens). Now since the disk appears to be still somewhat readable I think it's in the second bay... Time to hot swap that bay... cross fingers.
And I really should start migrating my array to 2T disks... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

WWWW,
Well, you can try out any raid level you want even on a single disk.
Its not very useful and its slow but you can test.
You will need to coax mdadm through the raid creation process, as it knows that a four partition raid6 all on the same spindle is a very bad thing. _________________ Regards,
