From a cold start, this is what shows up:

Booting 'Gentoo GNU/Linux'

Loading Linux 3.16.5-gentoo ...

and there it hangs.

Any ideas on how to proceed here?

TIA,
Bill

Edit: using some version of Grub2

needlern,

It may boot perfectly well, but with black text on a black background. Its a serious statement, its not an error to have no console drivers in your kernel.
Those two lines are not written by the kernel.

Tell us how you made your kernel, the disklabel you have, either MSDOS or GPT.
Post the output of
Code:
lspci
ls -l /boot

the content of your bootloader configuration file
and put your /usr/src/linux/.config onto a pastebin site and post the URL
Oh, one CPUs worth of /proc/cpuinfo may help too.

Thanks for the reply NeddySeagoon. You and I went through all of this a month or two back. To address your questions, I'm going to have to put the Gentoo 20140529 Install CD back in the box and boot it up.

I built the kernel myself, the text of the two lines is written in white letters on the black background. The disklabel is GPT. It may take me a day or two to round up the info you need.
