Last week after I installed Evolution it looked like it was starting normally and importing from an evolution-backup.tar.gz file. Then the progress indicator window closed and nothing else happened. Evolution would not start again. It wouldn't start after multiple unmerge/emerge cycles. Two days ago I unmerged it again, did a --depclean and at the end of the day shut down as usual. Yesterday I emerged Evolution once more: it started once, with the same symptoms as last time.

This is what /var/log has to say:

Code:
Dec 06 16:01:35 [kernel] evolution[19231]: segfault at 547b55f9 ip 00007f75df414476 sp 00007fff1165bfb8 error 4 in libc-2.19.so[7f75df383000+19a000]

This is what dmesg has to say:

Code:

[32702.348994] evolution[19231]: segfault at 547b55f9 ip 00007f75df414476 sp 00007fff1165bfb8 error 4 in libc-2.19.so[7f75df383000+19a000]

I'm not savvy enough to understand these messages. Can anyone help me with this? I'd really like to get Evolution up again after the hard drive failure.

I'm about ready to start calling all my email contacts to get their emai addresses for claws-mail (because, of course, claws-mail doesn't recognize the vcards I exported from Evolution so I wouldn't be stranded without address books). Please help me avoid this pain.

I don't know what happened. This morning as I was preparing for the pain of moving over to claws-mail, I clicked on the Evolution launcher again in the forlorn hope that somehow it might start this time.

It did. And it was fully configured from the restore 2 days ago. I backed it up, shut it down and restarted it. It's running for now.

I have no idea at all what happened between yesterday and today.

I'm going to mark this one... resolved.
