Hi
I am in yet another install attempt. Got as far as emerge --noreplace netifrc when I got:

Clearly something is amiss with my USE flags but I am not far enough along the learning curve to know how to work around this.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Thats not a USE flag issue.
It indicales that your gcc is too old to build glibc-2.19-r1 and your glibc is too old to support gcc-4.8.3.
The correct approach is to build some intermediate versions of gcc and glibc.
You may already have newer gcc installed but not selected. Use gcc-config to see what versions of gcc you have and to select the latest one.
Indirectly, the messages hint at a fairly out of date system but we will learn more of that later.

| YTF does gcc require newer glibc? It's a C compiler ffs, that's supposed to work just about everywhere.. |

it's chicken/egg problem, you need an egg to have a chicken and need a chicken to get the egg.
it's because you have no gcc and glibc install (you have them running, but not install for portage pov), and portage gets mad trying to figure out who need what, it happen because the chicken or the egg are pull from an emerge world kindof run.
just force one egg or the chicken and portage will get out of the loop, either forcing glibc or gcc or telling portage you need both but specify it instead of letting portage figure out it will need them both as in a emerge world/system scenario, just like how Hu show you. |

OK, I ran emerge --nodeps sys-libs/glibc sys-devel/gcc
After a pretty impressive 20 minutes or so of screen-printing I ended up with:

Your list of installed files is broken.
glibc can never be [ebuild N ], thats New. Its provided by the stage3 tarball and its not slotted, so it can only ever be [ebuild U ], for Update.
If you don't have glibc, bash won't work and your system won't boot.
gcc is slightly different. Its slotted. again, its provided in the stage3 tarball.
gcc can appear as either [ebuild U ] or as [ebuild NS ], for Update or an install in a New Slot.
I suspect these issues are going to be fairly widespread for you.

Yes. I had been installing by the handbook--got the kernel compiled and installed--and was working through the configuration steps when I entered find /lib/modules/<kernel version>/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko' | less with a typo. This caused the system to hang. After a half hour I just restarted. When I chrooted back in I neglected to mount /var (I had put it on a separate partition). I suspect that one or both of these things screwed things up pretty badly.
After the above I ran emerge again and got more and different circular dependency errors (this time relating to udev).
Since this is a test install (dual booting osx with gentoo using only EFI stub and osx's EFI selection menu w/ the option key), cleaning up a badly mangled system is not how I wanted to spend my time just now. I just started over. Going OK so far. |
