I installed Gentoo on a HP Laptop, Xfce desktop, openrc, grub0, genkernel, with "desktop Profile". All works fine, like my two normal desktop PC's. The extended function keys and other laptop specific items don't work. I don;t know how to complete the installation to get a working laptop.
I tried OpenSuse and Sabayon. They both work fine and have all laptop functions active.
Is there somewhere a "Laptop Profile"hidden away ?
If not, I would like to know which additional applications are to be installed and configured to:
a.) Make the extended Function Keys active. (Fn +F2/F3 to change the display brightness. Fn +F12 to enable/disable WIFI, etc.)
b.) Enable and configure Wireless
c.) Enable Battery Indicator, Powersaver, etc.

I tried OpenSuse 13.1 and Sabayon. They work but have to much bloat with Grub2, Systemd and all the other stuff they install and run. Gentoo with Xfce, Grub Static, OpenRC just needs 256K free ram. The remaining ram is available for VirtualBox clients, etc. without swapping to disk. |

I actually run the same setup (GRUB-0.97, Xfce4-4.11, & OpenRC-0.13), and I dislike GRUB2 more than most people, but it sounds like you may need EFI for those keys to work. Actually, if you want to be really lean, you could get use an EFI Stub Kernel and bypass GRUB entirely.
On a side note, you could potentially free even more RAM by moving away from a desktop environment and just using a simple window manager (FVWM, Ratpoison, Sawfish, Fluxbox, etc.). |

Have 4 boxes with Xfce used by the wife, granny and others in the family. They don't want to change to anything else.

The expanded Function Keys works if I use the genkernel-x86_64-3.5.0-sabayon kernel and initramfs from the old Sabayon 10 installation CD. It appears the problem lies with the current Kernel. I copied the .config file from from the Sabayon CD to /usr/src/linux and recompiled the current kernel. Does not work.
I just can't figure out how to configure the current Gentoo kernel so the extended function keys will work.
If anyone has a HP 250 G2 Notebook using Gentoo, please post your kernel version and .config file. |
