The same version of xbmc compiled fine before. But I wanted to add libcec support. So far as I can see, the problem is specifically with the cec plugin. I had tried adding some other USE flags at the same time (joystick, pvr, mysql, vdpau, pulseaudio), but I removed all of these, and it still fails.

you might want to post the relevant error (not millions of log-lines) so ppl can find out what went wrong and why.
if it's related to the "cec"-USEFLAG at all - have you tried emerging libcec separately?
eg
Code:
emerge -av1 dev-libs/libcec

i use the pulse-eight-cec-adapter on my xbmc-install and was surprised how easily it worked (almost) out of the box. i just needed one additional kernel-option - i think CONFIG_USB_ACM or sht. similar; i can look it up in case you need it.
GOOD LUCK!

Sorry, I was just following the instructions from the failed install, which said to be sure to post the *entire* log file. But, you're right, it would have been helpful to pull out the few lines where the apparent error is. Unfortunately, as I see now, those lines got silently cut off. Don't have the log file handy, so I'll need to post those lines when I get home. The problem definitely is in the cec plugin, but it might, indeed, be interacting with other things. So I will need to explore further and report back. I'm not sure I have the kernel option right, but that should not (I think) cause the xbmc compile to fail.

Meanwhile, libcec compiles and installs just fine.

some ebuilds check that and cause the build to fail (usually during configure), but some don't (i think the xbmc-13.2-ebuild does not.) i don't think this is the problem, either.

personally i find it helpful to emerge the failed pgk again with -v and check the last 20, 50 or up to 100 lines before the error occurs, eg
Code:
emerge -av media-tv/xbmc

this has helped me solve more problems than knowing exactly which versions of make, ld etc. are installed on the system (although that can be useful, too, of course).
GOOD LUCK!

Nope, I didn't have the kernel option set and nope, that's not what's causing it to fail to compile. :)

Here are what appear to be the relevant lines from the build file:

Oh, I see... iDoubleTapTimeoutMs has been renamed in libcec to iDoubleTapTimeout50Ms. So I need to figure out how to patch that in the XBMC build....

Yes, renaming that one variable, creating a patch, and dropping the patch in portage/patches/media-tv/xbmc works.

Should I submit that as a bug?

Mind you, I still can't get xbmc to connect to the adapter :) (maybe something in the settings?) but this is a big step forward.

You could also add:

>=dev-libs/libcec-2.2.0

to /etc/portage/package.mask, so that it doesn't update libcec to a version that is not supported by XBMC 13.2. When/if this is patched in XBMC (most likely when Kodi Helix is out), you can then remove the mask and update both libcec and xbmc.

I had the same issue as you did, and this is how I solved it.

I prefer my solution :p as it's extremely straightforward and lets me run the latest libcec (which seems like a good idea because, man, if my TV remote is anything to go by, there are still a few bugs to be worked out in the library!). Thing is, the latest libcec is fully supported by XBMC/Kodi, except for that one damnable variable rename.
