I'm having trouble getting sound to work on a laptop with multiple sound cards. Basically, there's no sound and nothing appears to be muted under alsamixer. Here's the info out of alsa-info.sh:

Still no sound, but a couple of extra points if they help. When I boot a Gentoo live CD, sound does work. In fact, I can chroot into the environment and things like mplayer play just fine. I modified my kernel compilation to match what I saw on the live CD, specifically

This didn't fix the problem.

Next, when I plug-in a USB headset and run speaker-test on it, I do receive sound. That being said, I don't know how to route the rest of the system's sound through the headset, so that's the only way I can get sound into it. Nonetheless, when I run a program like Ekiga, it does not see any sound devices including the USB headset.

Finally, I tried using pulseaudio, but I still have no sound.

Any ideas?

Alright, I finally have this figured out. In case anyone runs across this, here's what happened. For reference, this is a Clevo W230SS.

I compiled everything as modules as it made it easier to experiment with

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf.
That being said, I did not change it. The core issue was that when the settings "Independent HP" and "Loopback Mxing" are both enabled in alsamixer, there is no sound. Either one, or both, must be disabled. Second, the default sound card is HDMI. There are two ways to fix this. Either, we can add the line

or we can add the commands

    type hw

to

~/.asoundrc

. The former sets the configuration just for the local user and the latter sets it globally.

Although all three methods work, at this point I believe that setting .asoundrc locally is the best option. The reason for this is that it allows us to quickly change what sound device we currently use. For example, when I plug in a USB headset, I change .asoundrc to

}
ctl.!default {
    type hw
    card 2
}


and now the sound comes out of the headset. When through, I change it back. There is no daemon or service restarting; alsa reads the file automatically.

In any case, hopefully the above helps someone else.
