|
|
I'm trying to install gentoo on my new rig and fdisk says than there is no DOS partition table and that all my data is going bye bye when a new one is written to disk
my partitions are as follows
[win 2k _|_ 2GB | NTFS _] Pri
[data ___|_ 4GB | FAT32 ] Pri
[programs| 20GB | NTFS _] Pri
[- ______|~44GB | - ____] Sec
its an 80GB disk so the other ~40 was meant for linux but fdisk won't let me create partitions even though I created a secondary partion for them to go on |

What are the actual command(s) that you type causing this error? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I had this problem right when I built my system, I retardedly mismatched the primary and secondary IDE so my hard drive was /dev/hdc and cd was /dev/hda |

What is the exact error message? The only think I can think of is to search for it with Google. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Not that I will likely be able to recommend anything based on the answer, but someone might: what software did you use to partition the disk in the first place? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

IIRC, starting with W2K, by default MS is using a new format for the partition table. I haven't looked into it recently, but I beleive the newer versions of fdisk are supposed to be able to handle it. |

I used win2k to partition my drive when I first started with this system. (couple months ago) I used NTFS and set up I think 20 gigs of this drive for win2K, and left the rest untouched. (this was during the setup of win2k) Actually, if anyone remembers back that far, they'll remember me posting about the drive not being able to be "initialized" properly through linux and I had to set it up under Win2K in order for Linux to even recognize it properly lol.
fdisk with gentoo never had a problem with it after that. |
