Virtualbox does not recognize "send the shutdown signal"

I have installed Virtualbox and it works fine. However when i would like to shutdown my W7 in an orderly fashion, the option"Send the shutdown signal" does not work. Nor does "ACPI shutdown" work

My machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad X1

Your guest OS needs working ACPI support for shutdown to work that way. The host OS support is irrelevant.

Yes, ACPI is enabled in the guest OS.

I discovered that if I use the ordinary "Shut down" button in W7, it shuts down properly. However if I use the VM's menu;

Machine -> Close -> Send the shutdown signal

nothing happens. However it works on an older PC I have. I can not see any difference in configuration between the two.

In case OP is still hanging around, or failing that, for those arriving by Google:

1) Make sure ACPI is enabled in your kernel config.
2) Make sure you've emerged and added acpid to your default run level.

Only then, the ACPI Shutdown function works.
