Gnome3 Installation

Hi All,

I installed Gentoo following the amd64 guide.

Afterwards I wanted to setup Gnome and saw this wiki post

As my system is now up and running, could I just simply go to this section in the wiki page and complete the steps starting from:

Installing the Gentoo Base System
Choosing the right profile

Or would I need to boot from a live dvd again and start from scratch.

If you system is up and running as you want, there's no need to re-do anything.

Note that profiles are just pre-made configurations that can be conveniently used as a shorthand for a few common usage scenarios, but there's nothing that can be a done with a given profile that can't be done with the rest of the profiles using just a few changes. They affect mostly the default USE flags, but also several other things.

ps: you can swap profiles without much problem, usually. To know what would change, just eselect a new profile and then do "emerge -auDvN @world". Some changes might be more drastic than others but, if you have a comprehensive set of use flags in your make.conf or package.use files then almost nothing should change. The most notable exception are the multilib vs. non-multilib profiles. You can change from multilib to non-multilib easily but the opposite change is not officially possible, that's the way it used to be anyway).

Thing is I'm not really sure, I wanted Gnome 3 and also read that you can run without systemd but could hit issue if something is depending on it.

This is a new learning curve for me so I would rather break and go through the installation a few times and learn something each time.

I changed the profile and check what would be emerged and also wondered what would be the difference is I just included systems to my USE flags.

I have updated the profile and rebuilding has just finished. There were 167 packages and took about 1 hour 45 minutes.

I'll go through the kernel setup and see how it looks after rebooting.

If you want gnome3 then you are bound to systemd. You might be able to run without it but with 3.14 it will be more difficult (if possible at all) and that@s definitely the direction they are walking towards.
