Hello. First i would like to apologize for my poor English.
I use many usb memory sticks. Most occasion for the tv , live cds , transfer data.
Lately i have a problem with some usb sticks i've used (no hard use) for live cd and then i formated. For example
This is the output of /var/log/messages when i put in port.

after all this , i have 2 problems
a) cp command doesn't stop. I am trying to cp a file but it freeze. The file sometimes is less bytes sometimes (!) is more bytes...
b) even if the file is copied i can't unmount the dev. Only with -l option.
I am pretty sure the file is corrupted cause my tv doesn't play it
Thanks |

It could be either thing. It could also be a kernel bug, it wouldn't be the first time I see a problem with the USB stack in linux. But, analogously: it wouldn't be the first time I see a bogus Kingston DataTraveler unit, so...
If you have some other pendrive you can use that to test if the port is working ok. The other way around, you could use a friend's computer to test if the offending pendrive works on it.
Also, you might want to check if the same pendrive works on the same computer when using a different distro (i.e. a knoppix livecd or whatever else).
Other than that, the only way to have a chance to see what happens on that concrete moment where it all freezes would be to get a core dump. That should at least give us an idea on where the kernel crashed. |

Bear in mind that usb connectors wear out, i had it on a bit older hardware.
some connectors fit in perfectly others not and this behaviour is hard to proof at all.
especially portable computers are prone to that. |
