I have been able to burn CD-ROM discs with my Thinkpad T500, but thus far no DVDs, even though the device supports a wide range of media.
My specific problem today: I have a batch of dual-layer DVD+R DL discs. I have a garden-variety DVD ISO image (2.7 GB) that I want to burn, but it fails before starting with an error.

I've tried burning with k3b, brasero, and cdrecord at the command line, and nothing has worked.
The error message is cryptic:

What's it saying here? That the data to be burned is so small, that I should use a single-layer disc? Why should it matter?
I'm not sure what this message is supposed to mean, though it comes after the write fails, so it may not be relevant:

At first, I thought I had a coaster, but when I query the disc with dvd+rw-mediainfo, it tells me the disc is still blank:

Is it the medium? When I try to do it in brasero, it recognizes the blank disc and lets me select it as a target, until I choose the source ISO. At that point it says something like "replace the CD/DVD with a supported CD/DVD". So does this mean that I can't burn standard ISOs to dual-layer discs? Are these only for video?

It is somewhat riddling why your command line run of cdrecord
reported no SCSI error.
Your drive promises to support that type of medium:

No. All DVD types are suitable for ISOs or other data formats.
Other than with CD, there is no special audio or video sector
type. You need an UDF fileystem with special layout for video
DVDs which shall play on an entertainment DVD player. But the
burner drive should accept any kind of data stream as long as
it fits on the medium.
You may try what happens if you use a program based on libburn.
E.g. the Xfburn GUI program or one of these command lines

This is why I thought maybe it will only write to a dual-layer disc if the image is large enough to exceed the capacity of layer 0. If true, it would be hirnverbrannt.

I have tried brasero, it's supposed to be based on libburn. It behaves even more strangely. When I put the blank disc in the drive, it detects it as

The minute I select the 2.9 GB ISO image in question, the indication for the DVD changes to:

(8.5 - 2.9 = 5.6)
and a yellow flag appears below with the text

So it likes the disc until the point where I select the ISO image to burn, then suddenly it's no good anymore. That's the next thing that leads me to suspect that the ISO image is too small to be burned to this type of disc.

This is consistent with my experience. I have had good success with DVD-R discs in the past. Recently, I've noticed that stores hardly carry them anymore  Given no alternative, I've bought DVD+R discs because my hardware claims to support them, but I have yet to successfully burn even one of those, let alone a dual-layer disc

Exaktlich, it is. Especially since DVD+R DL serve best as
drip mat. The fewer data you put on them, the better is your
chance to have them readable.
Not only cdrecord (resp. its fork wodim) but also growisofs
show an unhealthy admiration for this type. growisofs exits
after saying:

Depending on its configuration and runtime settings,
Brasero may use cdrecord for CD and growisofs for DVD,
or libburn for both families.
Xfburn is guaranteed to use only libburn for CD, DVD, and BD.

Try package name "libisoburn". This here looks good:

(I have few experience with Gentoo . My sport is burning
and ISO 9660.)
Or get the GNU xorriso source tarball
http://www.gnu.org/software/xorriso/xorriso-1.3.8.tar.gz
and do

I've now tried it with Xfburn as well, and get this error message, again before the write can even begin:

It has been a few months since I last tried burning a DVD+R, and I don't remember what was in the logs. (Unfortunately I don't have a DVD+R disc that I could use to test this.) But the problem I had was very similar -- the write would fail right at the start, and try to fixate. When I checked the disc in another machine, it was blank. I was able to write to it in that other machine. In all the failed cases I was writing with k3b (which uses cdrtools in the back-end).

If the following code in libisoburn-1.3.8.ebuild means that
it installs what the source tarball's "make install" installs,
then you get a /usr_or_something/bin/xorriso which is quite
small and dynamically links to libburn, libisofs, and libisoburn.

GNU xorriso on the other hand statically links up the same
source code in a single binary. This gives a large
self-contained binary which links dynamically only to libc,
libpthread, and optionally some others if their development
header files were present at compile time.
So it works with no installation.
In either variant:
If xorriso reports a failure and you still have a blank medium,
then redo the failed run with additional cdrecord options
-V and -vvv for maximum verbosity. Catch the lenthy result in a
log file:

This will report the SCSI commands by which libburn operates
the drive (SATA, PATA, USB: all is a vehicle for SCSI) and

will see what goes wrong.
In this case send the log file /tmp/xorriso.log to scdbackup@gmx.net
I will then post a summary and diagnosis here.

@penetrode,
I hate to say it but Linux support for burning optical media is years behind the 3rd party Windows utilities. I generally just use imgburn which runs fine under Wine. It has excellent support for burning dual-layer DVD-R/+R. Ho hum...

Hi,
Stephen (penetrode) meanwhile sent me the messages of
a failed attempt to write the medium via xorriso.
The drive reported this error to libburn:

libburn : FAILURE : SCSI error condition on command 53h RESERVE TRACK: [3 73 03] Medium error. Power calibration area error.

The Power Calibration Area on DVD discs is used automatically
by the drive for small burn experiments in order to find laser
settings which promise good readability.
The drive gave up on the medium after trying to burn to that
area.
I advised Stephen to try other media, and in worst case an
different drive.
