I built:

[ebuild R ] app-editors/emacs-24.3-r6:24 USE="X dbus gif gpm gtk gtk3 jpeg png tiff xpm -Xaw3d -alsa (-aqua) -athena -games -gconf -gnutls -gsettings -gzip-el -hesiod -imagemagick -kerberos -libxml2 -livecd -m17n-lib -motif -pax_kernel (-selinux) -sound -source -svg -toolkit-scroll-bars -wide-int -xft"

...and icons are missing from the top border
Error messages dump out from the console:

emacs:32381): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_loadable_icon_load: assertion 'G_IS_LOADABLE_ICON (icon)' failed

(emacs:32381): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'edit-find' for stock: Failed to load icon

(emacs:32381): Gtk-CRITICAL **: render_fallback_image: assertion 'pixbuf != NULL' failed

(emacs:32381): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(emacs:32381): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(emacs:32381): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_cairo_surface_create_from_pixbuf: assertion 'GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed

(emacs:32381): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
.
.
.

i've updated the use varialbles and did:

emerge --update --deep --newuse --ask @world

and the problem is still there. I looked in bugzilla and there is nothing relivant
am I missing a use flag? Is there a missing package with the icons?

Erich

Hmmm,
I looked @ the bluefish-2.2.2 post & your suggestions. I have a
tendency to keep things as simple as possible. I have it set
to the simplest profile, [1]. It may be that I have to get gnome
in the picture (profile [4]). My previous system had the simplest
profile too. I've decided to add global ( gnome, gtk3 ) use flags
& see what happens

I fixed it,
Thanks. I emerged gnome-icon-theme
and the problem went away. Although
it disturbs me that this isn't pulled in as
a dependancy for emacs/bluefish etc
