Which entry should I put for ALSA_CARDS in make.conf?
lspci detects Quote: | # lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) | emerge --info tells me Quote: | ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" |
equery seems not to accept wildcards. Quote: | $ equery h alsa_cards_* |
So I have no idea which programs at all would make usage of such an entry and http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA doesn't even mention make.conf.

ALSA_CARDS is used by sys-firmware/alsa-firmware and media-sound/alsa-tools (result of eix -U ALSA_CARDS).
If you have an intel hda(according to your lspci output), you don't need to bother with ALSA_CARDS, because that card doesn't require anything special. If you still want to set it for the sake of completeness, use ALSA_CARDS="hda-intel". _________________ Black Holes are created when God divides by zero! |

Thanks for the explanation about the Intel alsa card. And especially for "eix -U ALSA_CARDS", seems to me it's worth once checking all the other options of eix. |

I just noticed this variable while looking at the output of
Code: | emerge -pv alsa-tools |
Code: | ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" |
I have never noticed this variable before and there isn't any documentation as to what this variable is used for or if it should be set (at least no documentation that I've ever seen). Why is this the first time that I have seen this? |
