[SOLVED] 3.15.10 kernel panic

Hello,

I have my gentoo on /dev/sda2 for ages, the latest kernel beeing 3.6.2, and it worked just fine all the time.
Now I tried to upgrade to kernel 3.15.10. Compiled flawlessly with the old configuration, but then
panicked on first boot.

Unless you use an initramfs, which does not appear to be the case from your output, udev will not be running yet, so it cannot cause problems. Please show your kernel command line and check that you have included the required disk and controller drivers. There is an FAQ in the help forum about debugging kernel failure to mount root.

Thanks a lot. That pointed into the right direction. /dev/sda is in fact
a legacy IDE disk translated to scsi because of the hybrid mainboard that
provides two SATA channels as well. The problem disappeared after enabling
all relevant ATA/IDE options.

Funny though that the previous kernel didn't care about the difference.
That's why I didn't think of it being a problem and, in turn, didn't check
the relevant settings in the first place. I use gentoo mainly for my work
and not so much as a playground and perform system maintenace and
software installation in rather large time intervals, so that I'm not always
aware of all those bits and pieces that have changed in the meantime.

Sigh. Gentoo is still the best linux distro I know of - lean, fast and
reliable. The only thing that annoys me is udev. For the little benefit
of hotplugging (which I don't need at all anyway) it contaminates the
whole system and, after several years, still causes conflicts every
there and when. This is not a gentoo-specific issue, but gentoo, by its
flexibility, might be the only distro able to provide a solution. But
this belongs to another part of the forum ...
