|
|
I am still very new to both Linux and Gentoo.
Other than base installation, I emerged my first package today which was net-wireless/wpa_supplicant
This package apparently had 134 dependencies.
I have 800kbps and this whole process took around 10-15 mins.
I didn't expect it to take this long(Im guessing sheer size rather than processing power), and didn't expect it to have so many dependencies.
What are your views on this? And also do you know why its this big and has so many dependencies?
Regards. _________________ k. |

You probably have a USE flag set to also pull in the GUI to wpa-supplicant, likely +qt4.
You should use --pretend while emerging to see if there's anything unexpected, or use --ask so it asks before installing. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

As the user above said, take a look at the USE flags and dependencies before hitting the "Yes" big green button.
For that, just use emerge -pv or emerge -va. If you, as said above, emerged wpa_supplicant with USE="qt4" (and hence, compiled qt4) in just 15 minutes then you can only be proud of your cpu. Mine would have spent a much longer time on that |

It's a very valid concern even for fast CPUs as clogging the network is also annoying.
Then again, at 800kbps (or do you mean 800kBps?) downloading qt4 will take a long time... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD
