I have successfully got a windows 7 vm working. Now comes what should be the easy part, but it isn't.

Installing the vmware tools. I assume this is needed for 3D support in the guest OS. The only problem is vmware player doesn't have the windows.iso and can't (or won't) download it. It just claims to be up to date if I manually tell it to download all downloadable components.

So, what am I missing here?
Code:
[ebuild   R    ] app-emulation/vmware-player-6.0.2.1744117  USE="vmware-tools -cups -doc" 0 Ki

Thanks.

EDIT: What I was missing was the use flags on vmware-tools

I don't recall if the vmware accelerated driver was part of the tools install thing or not. I thought it was only the clipboard passthru and a bit more of the usb and removeable drive management features.

vmware-player has always been gimped compared to the $$$ versions such as workstation. I wouldn't be surprised if they gimped the display driver support. What does Windows claim it's running for the graphics adapter?

It is just using the generic windows driver. I think the video acceleration was listed under the benefits of installing the tools.

Anyway, I did manager to download the tools, but it is proving difficult to install manually. The net says to run vmware-installer -console --install-component=<foo> but gentoo doesn't seem to install it. :?

I really wouldn't be either except that it claims to support this and there are plenty of references to it being possible. Most regard it as being trivial.

I haven't done a windows client in vmware in a long time but I have done RH and Centos ones on top of Workstation. I recall the tools install mounting an iso that the guest then would presumably autorun for a windows client to set up drives on its side. For the RH clients, this was a perl script I had to execute once the iso was mounted.

Okay, I kind of got it, via a round about way that I'm not 100% sure if I should post here. I'd still like to hear of there is a better way to do this.

EDIT: We posted at the same time. My problem was just that vmware player wasn't downloading the widows.iso file to install.

Add the appropriate use flag to the vmware-tools package

Code:

 # equery uses vmware-tools
[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for app-emulation/vmware-tools-9.6.2.1744117:
 U I
 - - vmware_guest_freebsd  : Install VMware Tools for FreeBSD guests
 - - vmware_guest_linux    : Install VMware Tools for Linux guests
 - - vmware_guest_netware  : Install VMware Tools for Netware guests
 - - vmware_guest_solaris  : Install VMware Tools for Solaris guests
 + + vmware_guest_winPre2k : Install VMware Tools for Windows 95/98/ME guests
 + + vmware_guest_windows  : Install VMware Tools for Windows 2000+ guests

(Sound of me hitting my head against the wall)

That is so obvious I don't know why I didn't see that. Thanks.
