Hi,
For some time I am trying to run Dosbox 0.65 to play old dos games, for this purpose I tried many things, on x86, on amd64, different SDL video drivers, etc...
I got it working on x86, with SDL configured to use svgalib. I did this by defining environment variable SDL_VIDEODRIVER=svgalib. Other drivers always gave me problems.
But here is the important part, I run console-only, i.e No X11, Xfree etc... Inside X it would probably work (with SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11), but it's no good for me.
With svgalib, at least I made some progress and got Dosbox running, but the keyboard was completely messed up! It was like the keys were shifted to the left and up... x was ' , e was [, j was Enter and stuff like that. I tried editing /etc/vga/libvga.config, checked and tried using different keymaps, but nothing worked...
It also worked with DirectFB on amd64, but the same problem as above, messed up keyboard map.
With SDL_VIDEODRIVER=fbcon, I always get "Can't init SDL, no available video devices", no matter what I do. Libraries are installed, I have given video group access to the user (it's the same with the root user anyway). The SDL web page FAQ mentions some workarounds for this, but none of them worked. And yes, I have the framebuffer for my card (nvidia fx5200) compiled in kernel and working properly.
Please help, if you managed to get it working with any of the svgalib, fbcon, ggi, directfb drivers, share how you did it. Thanks |

Is it possible to run DOSBox without running X first? |

Good day.
I am fan of console and all-old. And i have trying run DOSbox( ver. 0.74) in console without X11 to. I tried play in old amazing dos game "Prehistoric2". With version 0.74 of dosbox I had same problem as have topicstarter- crazy keyboard, segfoult, freez and etc. I tried turn different options, but less success. And only version -.9999 of dosbox truly help me!.
But exist same rules. For svgalib - in file /etc/vga/libvga.config need set "chipset VESA" (uncomment this line), and change "Helper /dev/svga" to "Helper /dev/svga0", because in my system there was this name of svga device . Next, in file /root/.dosbox/dosbox-SVN.conf (default dosbox configure file) set next: "usescancodes=false" "scaler=normal2x". That all. Sorry, not all. Fbcon i am use with comand "export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=fbcon" and 16bit color depth. Svgalib - "export SDL_VIDEODRIVER=fbcon" 8bit or 16bit color depth of framebuffer.
Hope, it information may be will help somebody. |

Yes. Because dosbox used sdl library, and that, in turn, can be used to display graphics framebuffer. |
