Try

LANG=C emerge splashutils

It won't fix your issue, but we will be able to understand what "Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu" mean :)

You must disable the truetype USE flag for splashutils in /etc/portage/package.use:
Code:
media-gfx/splashutils -truetype

it didn't help
Code:

# LANG=C emerge -av splashutils

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N     ] media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1  USE="fbcondecor mng png -gpm -hardened -truetype" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 new), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

Oniryczny,

It actually helped quite a lot. This time it compiled. Now the linker cannot find the symbol cmsFreeToneCurve to link the package.
This normally indicates a missing dependency.

Unfortunately, I don't know what provides the cmsFreeToneCurve symbol.

-- edit--

Maybe I can do better than that. I used to use media-gfx/splashutils on a syystem that has not been powered up for a year or two.
I'll see if I can find all the bits.

Get to "-r5" ;) or wait for portage to pick it up from bugzilla. It is working fine here on multiple systems : https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506124

If you want it now, you could get a local overlay http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Overlay/Local_overlay

Copy the latest ebuild in there, get and apply the patches from bugzilla, up the version to -r5, and presto!

Oniryczny,

What Maitreya said is to use the testing splashutils

Make the file /etc/portage/package.keywords and add the line media-gfx/splashutils
The testing media-gfx/splashutils may need other testing packages.

okay then,
I'm bit silly (as usual)

Can you just tell me what should I do to make splashutils work properly?

-r5 in portage tree? not yet :(

Ah sorry Oniryczny, I had no idea as to where you were and therefor made some assumptions and was short on info.

1.
When you look at the table on http://packages.gentoo.org/package/media-gfx/splashutils you can see which version are masked unstable or stable or masked even.
Like NeddySeagoon said; first get to the higher version in portage that isn't marked as stable yet.
You do this by adding an entry to /etc/portage/package.keywords
It looks like this:
Code:

media-gfx/splashutils ~amd64

or if you are on x86
Code:

media-gfx/splashutils ~x86

or if you don't want to be specific
Code:

media-gfx/splashutils ~*

or you could be version specific
Code:

=media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r4 ~*

More on this http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Knowledge_Base:Accepting_a_keyword_for_a_single_package

2.
If you re-emerge the package now, several thing could happen. If the just keyworded package needs others dependencies that are also marked as unstable then portage will tell you this. (if you try with --autounmask-write on your emerge command, exactly those dependencies will be available via etc-update into your /etc/portage/package.* files)
If it compiles: yay! However I think you have the same issue as I did and "r4" also had the issue for me. so.... on to 3!

3.
So the latest version in portage still doesnt work for us. Luckily some people use bugs.gentoo.org and share their experience for others to use. When you look at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=506124 people have been working on it.
To get this imaginary (not in portage) -r5 we have to use a local overlay. http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Overlay/Local_overlay
Apply the patches from the bugzilla entry:

Get the patches needed from the original ebuild
Code:

mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/files
cp /usr/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/files/*1.5.4.4* /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/files/.

Then get the modified ebuild and add the patches (thank you motorsense!)
Code:

wget https://506124.bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=381320 -O /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r5.ebuild
wget https://506124.bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=381322 -O /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/files/libmng2-lcms2.patch
wget https://506124.bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=374106 -O  /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/files/splashutils-1.5.4.4-freetype251-splashutils.patch
wget https://506124.bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=374078 -O /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/files/splashutils-1.5.4.4-freetype251.patch

Get your ebuild and files validated by portage, add it to package.keywords and emerge it!
Code:

echo "=media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r5 ~*" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r5.ebuild digest
emerge splashutils

No need to be sorry, Maitreya :)
You were right about -r4, it crashed as well.

I did all your suggestions but there isn't any -r5 in repository...
Code:

# emerge -pv splashutils

 * IMPORTANT: 2 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
 * man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ~] media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r4  USE="fbcondecor mng png -gpm -hardened -truetype" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 new), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Oniryczny, you need to set up the overlay, check point 3 of Maitreya's answer, especially the wiki guide.

Matreya, thank you really much for the help.
I did all your points, however I still have some problem:

Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries

fenrirjk: you are missing an acceptable lcms2 library. This is normally provided by media-libs/lcms. There seems to be a problem with the ebuild you used though. It allowed the build system to enable silent mode, which makes it harder to debug problems. Please report this to the maintainer so that the ebuild can be switched to force the build to print out the commands it runs.

Oniryczny, you need to set up the overlay, check point 3 of Maitreya's answer, especially the wiki guide.

My lcms library:

I think I'll just wait a fixed version to come on the repository :)
Too much troubles just for a bootsplash...

Just reporting, approach described by Maitreya worked fine for me. Many thanks, this has been an annoyance for some time.

Just make sure the packages (freetype and BOTH slots of lcms like said above) have static-libs use flag set.
Then my instructions should be enough. Also when you ask for help in these forums, do not forget to switch to english/C as otherwise far less people can help you.

Thank you, Maitreya
it was all goos except me being silly that I forgot my local overlay was not in /usr/local/portage but in /usr/portage/local
After changing directories to proper ones I emerged -r5 successfully :)
