Lini, my machine, is cross with me !

I have recently performed a few updates and keep snagging on setuptools. Lini hits me with a segmentation fault, I tell her we're not playing tennis. I have read the "how to plead ignorance" manual, I've googled, searched the forum and not had any joy so I hope it's fine that I now post for assistance and that I'm not asking something as obvious as getting dizzy while heading widdershins.

I have run
Code:

emerge -uDN World
emerge -uDN system
python-updater
revdep-rebuild

and a command to update ruby, which eludes me just now. I have just updated gcc, and restarted just in case. I've also waited a week in the hope that there was a package error that
Code:
emerge --sync
could fix.

The various outputs I have received are listed below. I hope I've pulled my weight before posting and hope what I've posted is relevant to the problem. Any help is appreciated.

The error emerge throws at me is as follows :
Code:

P.S. I hope it's ok posing all the info directly into the post, I'll read up on wgetpaste later today.

I left Lini for the rest of the week. man emerge lead me to
Code:
 emerge -uDNe python --exclude setuptools

which told me on a few occasions that my kernel config was missing and as a result certain items could not be configured/installed correctly (I have a sneaky feeling I've seen this last week aswell). So I've checked /usr/src/linux for the .config and found that indeed it had gone. I ran
Code:
make oldconfig
which regenerated the .config. Setuptools is still failing me when I run
Code:
 emerge -uDN world

As I was busy in the kernel folder I started recompiling the kernel and I'm re-running
Code:
 emerge -uDNe python --exclude setuptools

I'll see if that resolves anything.

Next I plan on running
Code:
 emerge -uDNe world --exclude setuptools
to ensure that atleast all the other things can update. This should leave me with setuptools still being a nuisance. I haven't seen anything else in the forums to resolve my problem and google is claiming ignorance. Till next time I'll be compiling :)

Carel ... this MULTIBUILD_VARIANT is from the new python-r1.eclass and the above is the outcome of python_copy_sources() ... not sure why exactly but I imagine the segfault is due to cp being provided some invalid parameters. This may be as you have python 2.7.7, 3.3.5, 3.4.1 but PYTHON_TARGETS for setuptools only includes python2_7 and python3_3 ... with -python3_4 (wild guess). Anyhow, its no doubt a bug with python-r1.eclass (which from all accounts has some teething problems). You should report it on b.g.o

best ... khay

Hi Khayyam,

Thank you for the response. I read it and added the two flags you recommended.

I had added them before but then had disabled them during my fiddling. I have also uninstalled the existing setuptools, virtualenv, virtualenvwrapper and virtual-clone using pip as thse were also throwing error messages and in some other bug their removal and re-installation was suggested as a solution. I have however not been able to re-install setuptools. So for now I'll wait it out a bit before I start doing some real damage.

I have also filed a bug under the ticket number of 516624. I have also

As a side note, one of the paths mentioned in the error has a double forwards slash // in the one pathname used in a copy command could this an the issue. My understanding is that Linux will automatically reduce double slashes that lie somewhere in the middle of a path name to single slashes, so I can't see that this is an issue but perhaps it is. Just a thought.

Thanks once again for your response and I hope you have a good week.

I reported the bug, the developers resolved it as being a coreutils problem and pushed it up to main stream it seems.

Does one post things like "Thank You" in the bugzilla or is that not done ? On Stack Exchange it's somewhat frowned upon.

As for my system I scratched the itch. So I'm currently re-installing stage3 and digging about for recovery disks. I've marked this as solved.

Thank you for your assistance all.
