Posted: Tue Jul 15, 2014 7:04 pm Post subject: [SOLVED] Input method MOZC doesn't work |
|
|
My system: Gentoo - gnome3
I need to enter Japanese texts in my computer. I installed successfuly ibus and I have the anthy method working properly.
However I would prefer the mozc method that is better. Unfortunately ibus cannot switch to mozc et the mozc icon doesn't show up at all in the keyboard icon tray despite the fact I could select it in the gui provided by the ibus-setup command.
here are some info I think may be useful.

Hi!
No answer? I'm here for a question instead. Sorry.
Why mozc is better than anthy.
I use anthy on KDE and I feel quite good. Only probles are:
It works with everything (konsole, dolphin, thunderbird and libreoffice) but firefox.
Every one and two it stops working on libreoffice if I don't iconize and reopen it.
Do you use libreoffice or firefox?
Do you suffer any issue on your system?
Tonight I'm going to try Mozc.
Maybe it is an issue with gnome. |

Here are some reasons why Mozc is better than anthy according to my wife (Japanese)
- the candidates are presented instantly (no need of the space bar)
- very often the candidates are more relevant
- mozc is smarter and it takes the context into account very much better than anthy to present the best relevant candidate first
- mozc memorize the users's habits more efficiently.
Of course anthy works and has been used for years. It is just a question of ranking.
I don't use KDE. I prefer Gnome. I use anthy on firefox with no issue and I use it a lot with Texmaker (Latex), not that much with LibreOffice but it seems to work also.
With Texmaker, sometimes it is dead (when using shortcuts to change from French to Japanese) and I must click on the icons to come back to French (my language) and then to Japanese. But this is mainly when I enter Latex commands.
I hope you will manage to use mozc with KDE. The feedback from Japanese people is almost always with KDE. Very seldom with Gnome.
Please, give me some feedback of your experiment of mozc under kde. |

Installed it yesterday evening.
Works very well. I like it. Also the tray icon is very nice.
I use it with libreoffice almost exclusively, because of studying japanese.
I used firefox by typing on google translator.
- Libreoffice issue is yet present.
- Firefox issue desappeared (at the moment) both with mozc and anthy. Don't know why and how. I did nothing but emerging mozc.
I'll keep you informed.
I'll provide packages and settings info.
Thanks for your (wife's) information.

Very happy to hear this . I look forward to knowing what packages you installed and your settings.
I am afraid there is an issue with Gnome +Gentoo. |

Hi,
Thank you for your information.
Nevertheless I must confess I am a bit surprised.
I thought you were using KDE but looking at your ibus.start file i see the option --desktop=gnome.
Did you really try mozc with Gnome or is it simply what you think should work in my case ?
Whatever it is, I tried it that way but the result is the same it does'nt work. Despite the fact that in ibus' settings I chose mozc and excluded anthy, in the keyboard tray I go on seeing anthy but not mozc.
The version of all the files installed are the same than yours! |

I'm surprised too.
It is my actual settings. I discovered it works better with that than with --desktop=KDE, but don't ask me why.
Now I have anthy excluded, using only italian and moxc.
I must confess I can't understand how ibus works, I know only it is working sufficently well.
You may reset ibus settings and reconfigure it over again. (cannot find how, but I did! )
PS. Have you ever heard about fcitx?
You can follow https://fcitx-im.org/wiki/Install_%28Gentoo%29
But I'm not so sure you can use mozc with it. |

All this make a lot of mysteries!
I have also tried fcitx and the behavior is exactly the same. Mozc doesn't appear as an input choice. |

Eventually I discovered that adding mozc input in ibus-preferences graphical utility is not enough. I had to add it from Settings --> Countries & Languages (I removed anthy first) .
Now it works fine
BTW Bandreabis let me know you opinion about JILT and whether you could manage to install it easily or not ? |

Good news! I'm happy you resolved. I think I have ja in languages.
I installed JILT with no problems, but I have not yet tested it. |

libreoffice issue is still present, and no bug solution came to my ear.
My question is how many input method framework are there?
SCIM, ibus, UIM... ??? _________________ Il numero di post non fa di me un esperto! Anzi! |

Hi!
Updates.
I experienced full CPU working with some kernels (so I kept using 3.10.14). Resulted that the problem is ibus!! And in particolar that
Code: | #/bin/bash
ibus-daemon -d --desktop=gnome -x -R |
dropping
I solved also that issue. _________________ Il numero di post non fa di me un esperto! Anzi! |
