On many systems the console resolution changes during boot when an KMS enabled video driver is used. Is there any way to get some sort of a signal or a script to run when this happens? The console resolution is usually given in /sys/class/graphics/fb0/virtual_size. So I would like to get a trigger when this file changes, although there may be other solutions. Is there a udev rule that will catch these changes?

You can try SIGWINCH, which is normally ignored. It may or may not be available on your system. Try installing a signal handler with sigaction().
