Just voted syslinux. Prior to reading this thread I was using GRUB 2. I had upgraded from GRUB legacy to GRUB 2 because it seemed to be the "recommended" thing to do and always hated the whole grub2-mkconfig BS with a passion.
Thanks for the syslinux / extlinux suggestions...total convert here. |

Grub2 but given the conversion rate of people who have tried syslinux I might need to investigate. |

GRUB-legacy!
Easy and comfortable to use, works fine with MSDOS and GPT disk labels.
Can't imagine to change to GRUB2 cause:
- I have no need for all these great Features of GRUB2 and try to prevent that.
- don't like its automatism and that its activated per default (for me a requirement of binary distros where everything should work out of the box) - so that I have to dive into it, to learn how to switch it off, to get back control.
- brake the device naming of the initial version
- Less comfort in editing and activating of the config changes, compared to legacy's easiest text file syntax of its grub.conf, no update run needed.
I would like to see btrfs on root support for GRUB-legacy and btrfs-raid functionality for the kernel command line syntax natively, without the need of a initramfs/initrd or a btrfs scan tool to run, before it could reassemble the raid devices, but that's a different story.
Nevertheless no reason for me to switch over to GRUB2, rather I switch to a different boot loader solution mentioned here. _________________ If you want to see a Distro done right, compile it yourself! |

I have checked "grub2", but that is not entirely true.
My main boot loader is EFI, and if the EFI boot menu is not entered by pressing F8 on boot, it automatically starts grub2. The EFI boot menu is used to boot Windows 7. _________________ Important German:- "Aha" - German reaction to pretend that you are really interested while giving no f*ck.
