I have windows on my laptop before. I just installed Gentoo onto it.
where
/dev/sda1 is windows
/dev/sda2 is also windows
/dev/sda3 is boot partition for gentoo
/dev/sda4 is root partition for gentoo

I installed Grub2 and did the # grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
It found only the gentoo kernel.

and now, I can't boot into windows because the bootmenu only displays the gentoo kernel

Hi,

do you have os-prober installed (http://packages.gentoo.org/package/sys-boot/os-prober)? It is used by grub-mkconfig to detect other OSs.

Best Regards,
Holger

Yes, I do. I'm not sure waht version, but inside /etc/grub.d/ is
00_header, 10_linux, 20_linux_xen, 30_os-prober, 40_custom, 41_custom, README

And just to be sure. Do you have the proper fs for the windows partition compiled into your kernel. Most likely NTFS.

Just for the next time something like this happens to you: emerge os-prober and re-running grub2-mkconfig would have been enough. No need to re-install the whole system! 8O
