Hello Gentoo Fellows!
If I use Alsa without dmix I couldn't listen more then one source at same time. If I do the same using a card like 'RME HDSPe MADI' which have tons of channels, should I be able to listen from some sources at same time with per application volume control (on kmix)? So, should I have the same advantage of dmix (or PulseAudio) but without the resampling issue?

Hello,
if your are looking for hardware mixing, I would guess that it will depend on the Linux audio module that support your sound card. Basically, the Alsamixer should show you the internal mixers of the sound card, unless you need a special tool for it.

Hi,
What I really want to know if using a card with several channels, the extra channels will be automatically used when I open a new instance of audio or I really need to set it manually?
Example:
Soundcard with 16ch.
1 - I'm listening to stereo music on MPD then
2 - I open another stereo music on Amarok.
The second one (Amarok) will automatically grab the unused channels or I will need to setup it manually for each application? On the automatically way I think I will always have a bitperfect instead of resampling.

If Alsa support multiple channels, each application using Alsa should be openned in a new channel. This is only speculative. The best you can do by yourself is to make a search on Internet to have more true information by others who have that card on Linux.

00-00: Aureal Vortex 2 ADB : au8830 adb : playback 16 : capture 16 |
It has 16 channels, there isn't per-application volume (use PA for that), but it can run multiple ALSA/PA/JACK programs simultaneously (even at differing samplerates) so that isn't a big issue; I just use whatever output method works best for each program. |
