lavacano ... if you're asking if these should be removed then, yes. The handbook 11.b. Disk Cleanup - Code Listing 2.1 has this as a step for the stage3 and recommends using 'emerge-webrsync' for the portage snapshot.

However, users could avoid this step by piping to tar ...

Code:
# wget -O - http://mirror.xxxxxxxx.xx/gentoo/releases/x86/autobuilds/current-stage3-i686/stage3-i686-20140415.tar.bz2 | tar -xjpv -C /mnt/gentoo
# wget -O - http://mirror.xxxxxxxx.xx/gentoo/snapshots/portage-latest.tar.bz2 | tar -xjpv -C /mnt/gentoo/usr

best ... khay

I think that they add glamour to my installations => I won't delete them.
They're like the objects mentioned in Stephen King's "Needful things" - you don't really need them, but you want them.

Heh, I don't have them but I can totally see them being there as sort of a 'trophy' of my install :P

I always delete them when done... or rather, they tend to be on another filesystem when I prepare a new one.

None of those files were used to install this box. I have more too ...
