Update: MATE 1.6 has been stabilized in amd64, MATE 1.8 has been added to the Portage tree in ~amd64; ~x86 and ~arm keywording is in progress, can happen any time now (and if not, I'll try to keyword it myself). |

Mate is finally in the main portage tree so unless you have some special reason to still be using the overlay I would recommend you delete the mate overlay and use the packages in portage. Mate-1.6 is stable and Mate-1.8 is ~amd64.
To use the portage versions delete the mate overlay.
To use mate-1.6, remove all mate references from your /etc/portage/package.keywords file and any unnecessary ones left in your /etc/portage/package.use file.
Update your system once this is done. This won't update any overlay packages that are equal to the ones in the main portage tree but, future updates will only be pulled from portage.
To use Mate-1.8 add the following packages to /etc/portage/package.keywords file
Code: |
#Mate 1.8 Desktop
app-admin/mate-system-tools
app-arch/engrampa
app-editors/pluma
app-text/atril
dev-libs/libappindicator
dev-libs/libdbusmenu
dev-libs/libindicator
dev-libs/libmateweather
dev-python/python-caja

Several packages have been renamed and as a result a system update will cause blockers. Just remove the packages causing the blockers and then update your system. After this is completed clean your system of obsolete files.
Code: | emerge --pretend --depclean --exclude sys-kernel/* | Check the list of files to be removed carefully before you commit.
If you encounter blockages with upower Code: |
emerge -C upower
emerge --oneshot --noreplace 'sys-power/upower-pm-utils' | Should solve it.
Enjoy.............. |

To remove blockers
Code: | emerge -C mate-file-archiver mate-document-viewer mate-window-manager mate-text-editor mate-file-manager mate-image-viewer mate-menu-editor |
Your system may have more, but this is basic |
