For the life of me I cannot figure this out.

I have a Canon LiDE 30 scanner that worked well until I moved to my latest rig (a Core i5 Haswell with 8 gigs of RAM). Now what it does it just sits there, unresponsive.

I'm using media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.24-r1 and media-gfx/xsane-0.999. Driver is plustek.

sane-find-scanner finds it on the USB ports.

scanimage -L also finds it, but it takes a few minutes to do it, and only says "device `plustek:libusb:003:010' is a Canon CanoScan N1240U/LiDE30 flatbed scanner". Nothing else.

scanimage > test.pnm reports "scanimage: no SANE devices found"

To confirm that it's not a hardware issue I have direct-connected it to a Ubuntu-running laptop and it recognizes it, pulls it up, and it's all kosher. I've swapped USB hubs, even direct-connected it, with no results. I'm going to switch it from a USB 2.0 to a USB 3.0 port that's on the motherboard to try that, but I don't think it'll matter much.

Any ideas?

I have an epson scanner and have the same issues. I know some time ago I could use the scanner perfectly and since then, the main things that have changed in my system are gnome2.X -> gnome 3.10 and initd -> systemd.

The thing with me is that instead of using vanilla-sources for the kernel, I'm using gentoo-sources and genkernel -- and this on top of the hardware changes.

Time for go vanilla. If that fixes it, I'm giving gentoo-sources a bug.

I'm using tuxonice sources. And reading again your problem, I tried using the USB2 ports instead of USB3 ones, now it works without any problems. I think my situation was a sane vs USB3 thing.

This may be the case. All the ports are going through the USB3 xHCI chip on the motherboard. I think I have a USB2 card spare that I can plug in and check.

Well, it's a hardware issue. The Canon LiDE 30 I have is NOT compatible with USB 3.0. It MUST be plugged into a USB 2.0 port controlled by USB 2.0 hardware (EHCI, not xHCI).
