suggest visit http://packages.debian.org/sid/all/firmware-bnx2/download ,download the package, open it, and copy the included folder bnx2 to /lib/firmware/bnx2.

I have come across the same issue when updating the kernel > 3.2. I have been able to solve the issue by setting:

Code:
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=N

and installing sys-kernel/linux-firmware

Cheers!

Any livecd/usb that supports the chroot command can be used to install gentoo. Suggest try sysresccd or ubuntu. If ubuntu;
Code:
sudo -i #or sudo su -
mkdir /mnt/gentoo
then follow handbook. building a custom minimal install cd is feasible but tedious.
