I have a system I installed from nothing less than a month ago and now when I try to update it, it has an obsession about networkmanager/modemmanager/ppp that I can't understand or resolve.

I don't have a modem, I don't use PPPOE nor ppp.

So why does portage insist

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy ">=net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8[modemmanager]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.8::gentoo (Change USE: +modemmanager, this change violates use flag constraints defined by net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.8: 'modemmanager? ( ppp ) exactly-one-of ( nss gnutls ) exactly-one-of ( dhclient dhcpcd )')
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.10.3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@preserved-rebuild" [argument])

I have set -ppp -modemmanager -nss -dhclient in my use flags, so why does portage absolutely want to install ppp and modemmanager?

Please, I'm at my wits end

Looking at the 3.10.3 ebuild of gnome-control-center there's a comment:
Code:
# FIXME: modemmanager is not optional
#        networkmanager is not optional

and a depend on modemmanager/networkmanager. So I guess that answers that problem...

Thank you, it does explain things.

Does that mean ppp is non-optional too? At least for modemmanager, there doesn't seem to be a way to avoid it.

For some reason pppd is not mentioned in modemmanager-1 - it probably does dialing and negotiation itself, however the kernel needs to have it enabled to deal with the network aspect.

I my opinion it does not answer the problem. Before gnome 3.10 modemmanager was optional (I hate to trash my system with things like ppp which I do not intend to use). I would like to know why suddenly this change (i.e. modemmanager is now required).

The thing is: it does answer why PORTAGE wants to pull in these dependencies. Why the dependencies are actually necessary you'll have to ask the devs, and likely it's the Gnome devs that needs to answer - not Gentoo.

I'd say just live with it, there are a lot of these things going on, just like the whole problem of having to go to gnome3 in the first place...

EDIT:

I just updated my Gnome3 box to 3.10 and can see why now (sort of). Gnome control center has nm-applet built in now, so-to-speak. I guess it's up to Gnome to make sure modemmanager can be removed or not...
