DirectFB has been failing for a while, and btsync doesn't seem to work, but those are unrelated. I can log in and play my boyband collection, so that's all that really matters to me right now.

Especialy i need the feature to mount usb-devices in kde the way it works with consolekit.

Yeah, you can see Dominiques' write-up here; basically it comes down to setting the flags (no policykit either), and using uam (minimal, written by a Gentoo dev) or pmount/pmount-gui. creaker also wrote a Qt variant for his KDE install, that also works in the context-menu for Dolphin, which might suit you better.

KDE definitely works fine, though I don't use semantic-craptop, as it's always been a pig, and I don't want a production database-server installed and running full-time on my laptop or desktop. Each to their own. In any event KDE4 finally feels as slick as 3.5 used to. :) 4.9 added "Attach as tab to.." which made life a whole lot easier.

andi,

does it mean it doesn't work after you've done an upgrade after this date, descibed in this post?

If anyone needed some motivation to consider btrfs and its snapshot function I think this would be it. But I'm not currently and this is a summary of what I had to do to fix the problem (skipping over many failed attempts and days of effort). I refuse to move to systemd at this point just to fix this problem.

Note: I use KDE exclusively, and I am on AMD64.

Firstly, get rid of as much gtk related stuff as possible by setting the USE flags in /etc/make.conf: "-gnome -gnome-keyring -gtk" and I found "-upnp" helped as well as it removed some unneeded dependencies.

It would be wise to now do
Code:
emerge -uDN world
.

Now for the surgery to begin. Place the following entries in your /etc/portage/package.mask:
Code:

>=dev-libs/glib-2.38.2
>=dev-cpp/glibmm-2.38.1
>=net-libs/glib-networking-2.38.2
>x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2
>x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.4
>=dev-cpp/gtkmm-3.10.1
>=dev-util/gdbus-codegen-2.38.2
>=gnome-base/gvfs-1.18.3
>=net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.2.4
#>=dev-util/anjuta-3.10.2   # REMOVED
>=x11-misc/xdg-user-dirs-gtk-0.10
>=dev-util/gdbus-codegen-2.36.4-r1
>=net-libs/libsoup-2.44.2
>=dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.38.0
>=dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common-1.38.0
>=gnome-base/gnome-keyring-3.10.1
>=gnome-base/libgnome-keyring-3.10.1

Next, wield the following sledgehammer:
Code:
 emerge -C anjuta cmus egg-python foomatic-gui gdbus-codegen gdk-pixbuf genius glib glib-networking glibmm gnome-keyring gobject-introspection gtk+ gtkmm gtkpod gucharmap gupnp gupnp-igd gvfs libextractor libgda libgde libgdu libgksu libgksu-python libgnome-keyring libgnome-python libgnomeui libsoup libunique metacity openscenegraph pidgin pywebkitgtk soundconverter steam-launcher system-config-printer-gnome totem-pl-parser vino webkit-gtk xdg-user-dirs-gtk yelp zenity

The final step is to rebuild
Code:

emerge -uDN world
emerge @preserved-rebuild
revdep-rebuild

This probably excessive sequence will pick up any problems. If these steps don't work for you because of blockers then you will have to use the sequence of steps I used above to construct the removal list. That is, try "emerge -pvuDN world", remove the blocker, check to see what depends on it with "equery depends", if you can get rid of it and its dependencies then do so.

I tried a more strategic removal and downgrade of the offending glib, but I could not get any combination of glib and gtk+ that would then build without the sledgehammering used above.

I encountered this problem on my amd64 KDE system. It appeared after @world update roughly two weeks ago. The following steps solved it.

1) Restarted computer and verified that the problem still exists.

2) Removed line
Code:
dev-libs/glib ~amd64

from /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords

3) Re-emerged glib, dbus and dbus-glib. The glib version emerged was 2.36.4-r1.

After these steps I restarted my computer and the problem was gone.

After re-adding the removed line to /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords, dev-libs/glib-2.38.2 would have been installed. It seems that I had no installed packages that would have prevented this downgrade, even though @world update had been performed before these steps (apparently with the newer version of glib installed).

My package.keywords and package.mask are empty.

On my "regular" ~amd64 Gentoo desktop I don't have this problem with glib-2.38.2.

I use Gimp 2.8.10.
The next version will be 2.9.1, now only available from gnome git repository.
I don't want to mess up my regular install so on a spare partition I installed Gentoo.
I used the same config files in /etc yet there I do have this problem.
Since apparently things should run ok on glib-2.38.2 I don't like to downgrade glib.
I'll do some more digging to find the culprit.
Gerard.

To continue:
I remembered that during the install of the new system I commented out all the USE entries in /etc/portage/make.conf
because I got too many circular dependencies errors.
After a while I uncommented them again.
This means a good part of the installed packages had different use flags compared to my "regular" install.
So I did
Code:

emerge -eN system

And now after a reboot no more consolekit problem!
Code:

 ck-list-sessions
Session1:
        unix-user = '1000'
        realname = '(null)'
        seat = 'Seat1'
        session-type = ''
        active = TRUE
        x11-display = ':0'
        x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
        display-device = ''
        remote-host-name = ''
        is-local = TRUE
        on-since = '2014-03-09T11:30:14.745652Z'
        login-session-id = '4294967295'

Solved for me (with glib-2.38.2)
Now I can start on Gimp-2.9.1.

Gerard.

Hi

I just updated my gentoo (was on vacation 2 weeks) and now i got the same problem. Pulseaudio is not working any more and I get the consolekit error when I log into my KDE with kdm. im an AMD64 with the systoms described in this bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501330

Is there any good solution available ? Except from 12monkeys which seems a bit over the top for me.

At the moment i try my luck with emerge -eN system

UPDATE:

emerge -eN system did not help here. Now i will try downgrading glib.

@Gerard

Could you post your make.conf ?

Thanks

Is this the writing on the wall in regards to being forced to switch to systemd? 8O

Unfortunately, I still haven't found system where this could be reproduced. Some people have said 'emerge -e world' type of workarounds have worked.
Would be nice if someone could pinpoint where the exact problem is.

Hello guys,

Ok here is my progress report:

I did successfully downgrade glib and console-kit does work again somehow on my amd64. However some other things are off now.

- Sound with pulseaudio is working again
- No warning when I log in from kdm to kde anymore
- Automounting with tray is still not working, additionally the devices do not get displayed anymore
- Networkmanager is not working, need to connect with wpa_supplicant to internet

Code:

ck-list-sessions
Session1:
        unix-user = '1000'
        realname = '(null)'
        seat = 'Seat1'
        session-type = ''
        active = TRUE
        x11-display = ':0'
        x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
        display-device = ''
        remote-host-name = ''
        is-local = TRUE
        on-since = '2014-03-11T07:33:56.747400Z'
        login-session-id = '4294967295'

Some things do not compile again with the new "old" glib stuff. I guess here lies the problem. I'm a little worried about the automounting, this should work with consolekit i think so something seems still broken.

In 12monkeys howtoi did get to the final emerge -uDN world rebuild but this failed with some gtk stuff. After fixing this nearly everything i had, compieled again with the old glib. But some things remained. For me it looks like some things just need to be reemerged but how can i find out what packages need remerging?

Here is the list of emerge @preserved-rebuild

Code:

emerge @preserved-rebuild

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

Here is the compile error:

Code:

Ok so i thougt: reermege geoclue to maybe solve this, but this did not work because geoclue was complaining about a libgudev. So i reemerged udev, now geoclue is compiling fine! So there are more packages that need reemerging than @preserved-rebuild is showing me. How can i find all of these ?

preserved-rebuild may not manage to rebuild everything in one run, just like revdep-rebuild. You might want to run it like this:

$ emerge @preserved-rebuild --keep-going

so that it continues even in case order is not perfect and re-run the command until the set is empty.

In case you indeed found a corner-case where preserved-rebuild fails (unlikely but there are some cases), try revdep-rebuild and file a bug report against portage with the output of revdep-rebuild and detailled explanation you would copy from this thread.

I'm facing the same issue... at least I've got sound back working after adding my user back to the audio group. Nevertheless it all started after an emerge world including the following packages:

Hello guys :-D

I made it finally :-D After nearly 3 days I managed to downgrade glib and my system fully without any negative side effects.

I will keept this in the masked section a while till this is reproduce able fixed.

Here is my process, heavily based on 12monkeys approach:

Firstly, get rid of as much gtk related stuff as possible by setting the USE flags in /etc/make.conf: "-gnome -gnome-keyring -gtk" and I found "-upnp" helped as well as it removed some unneeded dependencies.

It would be wise to now do
Code:
emerge -uDN world

.

Now for the surgery to begin. Place the following entries in your /etc/portage/package.mask:

Code:

>=dev-libs/glib-2.38.2
>=dev-cpp/glibmm-2.38.1
>=net-libs/glib-networking-2.38.2
>x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2
>x11-libs/gtk+-3.4.4
>=dev-cpp/gtkmm-3.10.1
>=dev-util/gdbus-codegen-2.38.2
>=gnome-base/gvfs-1.18.3
>=net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.2.4
#>=dev-util/anjuta-3.10.2   # REMOVED
>=x11-misc/xdg-user-dirs-gtk-0.10
>=dev-util/gdbus-codegen-2.36.4-r1
>=net-libs/libsoup-2.44.2
>=dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.38.0
>=dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common-1.38.0
>=gnome-base/gnome-keyring-3.10.1
>=gnome-base/libgnome-keyring-3.10.1

Next, wield the following sledgehammer:

Code:
 emerge -C anjuta cmus egg-python foomatic-gui gdbus-codegen gdk-pixbuf genius glib glib-networking glibmm gnome-keyring gobject-introspection gtk+ gtkmm gtkpod gucharmap gupnp gupnp-igd gvfs libextractor libgda libgde libgdu libgksu libgksu-python libgnome-keyring libgnome-python libgnomeui libsoup libunique metacity openscenegraph pidgin pywebkitgtk soundconverter steam-launcher system-config-printer-gnome totem-pl-parser vino webkit-gtk xdg-user-dirs-gtk yelp zenity

I also had to remove net-print/gutenprint to fix some blockers.

The final step is to rebuild

Code:

emerge -uDN world

Here it got tricky because it did not want to build without media-sound/lingot-0.9.1, so I added this to packages.accept_keywords

Also i had to remove some blockers first:

Code:
*   >=x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.10:2 pulled in by:
 *     (gnome-base/libglade-2.6.4::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   x11-libs/gtk+:2 pulled in by:
 *     (x11-libs/wxGTK-2.8.12.1-r1::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=net-libs/webkit-gtk-1.6.1:2 pulled in by:
 *     (media-gfx/gimp-2.8.10-r1::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=x11-libs/gtk+-2.24.10:2 pulled in by:
 *     (media-gfx/gimp-2.8.10-r1::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=x11-libs/gtk+-2.24:2 pulled in by:
 *     (dev-python/pygtk-2.24.0-r4::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=net-libs/webkit-gtk-1.6:3/29= pulled in by:
 *     (net-libs/libproxy-0.4.11-r1::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=net-libs/webkit-gtk-1.6:3= pulled in by:
 *     (net-libs/libproxy-0.4.11-r1::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=x11-libs/gtk+-2.12:2 pulled in by:
 *     (x11-libs/gtksourceview-2.10.5-r2::gentoo, installed)
 *
 *   >=x11-libs/gtk+-2.24:2 pulled in by:
 *     (dev-java/icedtea-bin-6.1.12.7::gentoo, installed)

Now for the tricky part, I tried to reemerge gtw-webkit, but it did not build.

I fixed most of the packages by hand but i think better would be a
Code:

emerge -eN system

I needed to to this two times and a lot of revdeb-rebuilds inbetween but now it is as good as new :-D

Good Luck!

I also experience the problem. It started after I did an emerge world yesterday. It would be really helpful if somebody could locate the bug so the problem can be fixed without having to downgrade glib or install systemd.

Does anybody have an idea why ck-list-sessions returns nothing (empty string) although console-kit-daemon is actually running (and producing output in /var/log/messages if put into debug mode)?

Another potential hint:
1) Put console-kit-daemon into debug mode:
Code:
     console-kit-daemon --debug

2) Launch a simple ck session:
Code:
     ck-launch-session echo

This will produce the following error in /var/log/messages:
Quote:
ck-launch-session: error connecting to ConsoleKit

A healthy system would not produce this error.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

I seem to be unable to downgrade.
I can see 2.36.4-r1 with eix:
Code:
Xecutor ~ # eix dev-libs/glib

     Homepage:            http://www.gtk.org/
     Description:         The GLib library of C routines

If I mask it in package.mask:
Code:
Xecutor ~ # grep -i glib /etc/portage/package.mask
>=dev-libs/glib-2.38.2
#<dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1

Then it wants to install 1.2.10 ?:
Code:
Xecutor ~ # emerge glib -vp
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  NS    ] dev-libs/glib-1.2.10-r5:1 [2.38.2:2] USE="hardened" 421 kB

If I mask also all versions below dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1 too:
Code:
Xecutor ~ # grep -i glib /etc/portage/package.mask
>=dev-libs/glib-2.38.2
<dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1

Then it wants to reinstall 2.38.2 again:
Code:
Xecutor ~ # emerge glib -vp
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   #] dev-libs/glib-2.38.2:2  USE="-debug (-fam) (-selinux) -static-libs -systemtap {-test} -utils -xattr" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 -python2_6" 0 kB

How did you manage to do that?

It was easy when I did it. "dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1" was the stable version then; "dev-libs/glib-2.38.2" was the unstable version. I merely commented out the latter version from my package.keywords.

Unfortunately, the "dev-libs/glib-2.38.2" version is now the stable version and I now have the original problem again.

You can try to downgrade using: "emerge -av =dev-libs/glib-2.36.4-r1"

However, when I try this, I get lots of slot conflicts from other packages that were upgraded when "dev-libs/glib-2.38.2" was upgraded. I've been reluctant to downgrade all of them.

Use 12monkeys and/or mine method above. It works also with the 2.38 version when it is stable. This is the case on my system.

First remove as many gtk related stuff as possible with the use flags and remove any blockers by hand. then mask the packages and remove them afterwards re-emerge them.

Good Luck!

I already managed to fix it by masking glib-2.38, latest glib-networking and latest gvfs.
However, to be able to leave portage in consistent state, gtk+ has to be rebuilt too.
The latest version that doesn't depend on glib-2.38 is gtk+-2.x. All the 3.x ones now want glib-2.38 :x :evil:
I'm thinking if removing 3.x and reemerging world would allow me to emerge it after that :?

P.S.: It's stuff like that which drives users towards systemd. CK may be old and unmaintained, but that doesn't justify breaking a working installation like that.
