Exploitable: remote
Date: February 20, 2014
Bug(s): #436518
ID: 201402-18
Synopsis
GNU Midnight Commander does not properly sanitize environment

Service.
Background
GNU Midnight Commander is a text based file manager.
Affected Packages
Package: app-misc/mc
Vulnerable: < 4.8.7
Unaffected: >= 4.8.7
Architectures: All supported architectures
Description
GNU Midnight Commander does not properly sanitize environment variables.
Impact
A remote attacker could entice a user to open a specially crafted

execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the process or a
Denial of Service condition.
Workaround
There is no known workaround at this time.
Resolution
All GNU Midnight Commander users should upgrade to the latest version: Code: | # emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=app-misc/mc-4.8.7"
