Hello,

I have this very odd ( at least for me ) problem on a my system ( has not been updated via emerge/sync for about 2 1/2 years - I keep on adding either older portage packages or recompile stuff from freshmeat or sourceforge ).
It has a number of apps that require older versions of dependencies, some abandoned titles... etc. It worked like a charm on a vanilla 3.4.74 - till about two/three weeks ago:

There is either an issue with bash or KDE Konsole - some of the apps lunched from Konsole are not behaving properly: sar, iostat, vmware workstation 9.

Code:
gentoo3 ~ # sar 1 10
Linux 3.4.74 (gentoo3)  01/18/14        _x86_64_        (8 CPU)
and hangs here, till a break... same with iostat:
Code:
gentoo3 ~ # iostat 1 10
Linux 3.4.74 (gentoo3)  01/18/14        _x86_64_        (8 CPU)

avg-cpu:  %user   %nice %system %iowait  %steal   %idle
           1.43   24.28    1.32    1.94    0.00   71.02

Device:            tps    kB_read/s    kB_wrtn/s    kB_read    kB_wrtn
sda             176.83     12033.94      3851.41  708473797  226743695
sdb               0.10         2.25         0.04     132309       2062

vmware services start fine, but from the interface, I am unable to start any of the VMs.

In the Xfce's Terminal app all these work just fine, without any issues - it is Konsole & bash that "freaks out" the apps, and me.

I am not sure what other info would you need to have a suggestion where to look for the problem. In the meantime I went to several locations, checked the ENV, recompiled bash and Konsole... no difference.

I started bash from within Konsole/bash.... no difference, but if I enter ksh, csh or fish from within Konsole/bash, all apps work as expected.

using GNU bash, version 4.2.10 x86_64 - with bashlogger enabled for a couple of years.

Thanks a lot for suggestions - this time I am just running of ideas and do not really want to loose more hair..

Mike

edit:

over past a few weeks something points me into SMP direction... vmware errors out with "Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to" - this might be a problem with CPU affinity, it simply does not look like a coincidence ( only when started from bash & Konsole )

EDIT: ( disregard this edit - it did not solve the problem )

removed all instances of 'Konsole' in $HOME/.kde4/...
for some reason, one of the profile/preference files made commands/programs executed in the Konsole/bash behave in an unexpected way - took me 2-3 weeks to figure out this simple thing. :|

unfortunately cleaning up all instances did not help, restarted X and it came back again:

> if Konsole/bash is opened from App Launcher, "sar 1 1" does not return results.
> if Konsole/bash is opened from a csh or ksh, sar works fine
> if Konsole runs ksh or csh, sar works fine as well
> sar works in Terminal ( bash / csh / ksh )
> sar works also in text mode / console.

any ideas? or is my system too old to even consider troubleshooting? as I mentioned, this is my primary workstation, and upgrading it would kill some older, not maintained pieces of code / apps...

Thanks!

Mike
