Edit: Was a hardware fault that just happened to happen at the same time as I did a major system update. New headphones are working fine.

<embarrassed>

Old post:

I have no idea what's causeing this, I did a system update, and now whenever I use an application that both records and outputs sound (anything with mic support, basically) my output volume cuts to almost nothing randomly.

Since it works at normal volume for a while, then at almost no volume for a while, then back to normal volume again, I can't just turn my output volume up, as that kills my ears when it goes back to normal again.

What information do people need to help me fix this. I am at a complete loss, and can't play with my friends until I fix this, as we rely on voice comms.

I have tried both with and without pulseaudio, and both have this issue.

Do you have the snd-hda-intel driver in use?

Just had a thought about this:

Is there any way, without having another pair of headphones, to test if this is an issue with my headphones, rather than my sound software?

Did a short test today, and I don't seem to get the cuts in volume out of my speakers, but I do with my headphones.

Any ideas other than "borrow a pair of headphones"?

Plug your headphone jack into your speakers. If there are no dropouts, it IS your headphones.
