I start my X server remotely after ssh'ing to the OS. That is I execute startx & and then 'x-out' of the terminal window on the remote computer. This stopped working for my userid after upgrading some packages however it still works when i do the above command as root user. I'm not certain what settings are different between the two accounts. Both seem to be executing the same xinitrc fine in X11 folder. |

What happens if you use nohup startx ... ?
Depending on the sshd/login it may decide to kill all children of that shell with hangup to make sure no unexpected processes linger when it's abruptly disconnected. Root may be different because there may just be real programs meant to be left running?
I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to do here, as starting X11 from a remote terminal for an interactive X session is not normal... usually remote admin would get xdm, gdm, kdm or something like that running and the user then logs in through that... _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

The reason i want to start X remotely is because local computer doesnt have a functional keyboard. I ssh from a computer right next to it, start X and then start synergy so that I can control the mouse and keyboard. Then I exit the remote ssh terminal. This worked up until recently for regular user (and still works for root). |

OK after more testing:
startx only terminates if I 'x-out' of the putty shell on windows box. If I type 'exit' thing continue running as expected. |
