I've been working on this a few days and can't find a solution so I hope someone here can help. This is a brand new build, there is not much installed past the base system other than X and Opera. Anything dependent on GTK won't install as gdk-pixbuf fails every time. I've tried all the various solutions to this issue that I could find or think of, including trying ~amd64. Here's where I think it pukes:
Code:
libtool: install: /usr/lib64/portage/bin/ebuild-helpers/xattr/install -c .libs/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0.2800.2 /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2/image//usr/lib64/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0.2800.2
libtool: install: warning: relinking `libpixbufloader-png.la'
libtool: install: (cd /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2/work/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2/gdk-pixbuf; /bin/sh /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2/work/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2/libtool  --tag CC --mode=relink x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc -std=gnu99 -march=native -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall -avoid-version -module -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -o libpixbufloader-png.la -rpath /usr/lib64/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders io-png.lo -lpng15 libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.la -lgmodule-2.0 -pthread -lrt -lgio-2.0 -lgobject-2.0 -lglib-2.0 -lpng15 -lm -inst-prefix-dir /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2/image/)

I've been trying to solve this problem for a week now! I have no solution--sorry--but perhaps I can add some information that might help to sort this out. Looking at your emerge output, I believe that we are experiencing the same problem with the same cause.

The emerge always fails at the installation phase.

Using the newer gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2 didn't change anything for me.

I get the following error message, which I think holds a relevant clue--particularly the bit about ld not finding -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0:
Code:
libtool: install: (cd /var/tmp/portage/x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.26.4/image//usr/lib64 && { ln -s -f libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0.2600.4 libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so || { rm -f libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so && ln -s libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0.2600.4 libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so; }; })
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.7.3/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: cannot find -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0

I checked and found that libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0.2600.4 does exist.

libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so also exists as a symlink pointing to libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0.2600.4.

So far, so good... maybe... but then there's this:

Code:
ld: cannot find -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0

Why is that?

There's another error message that got my attention:
Code:
libtool: install: error: relink `libpixbufloader-png.la' with the above command before installing it

Research led me to discover this:

Bug 481372 (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=481372)

>=x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf-2.26.4 MAKEOPTS=-j7 - parallel make failure in src_install(): libtool: install: error: relink `libpixbufloader-png.la' with the above command before installing it

At first, I believed that this was the cause of the problem--and maybe it is--but now I'm not so sure. If this bug were the cause, then I would expect that I could emerge gdk-pixbuf using MAKEOPTS="-j1" as a work-around. Well, MAKEOPTS="-j1" didn't work. Neither did MAKEOPTS="-j5"... ...so maybe this might not be the cause of the problem?

I tried unmasking gdk-pixbuf-2.28.2 (and the other packages that had to be unmasked as a result), masking gdk-pixbuf-2.26.4, and trying again with the newer 2.28.2 version. I got the same results.

well then. I changed my MAKEOPTS to -j1 and it installed. Thank you very much for your post, I wish I could return the favor.

You're very much welcome! Apparently your problem was indeed related to Bug 481372! I'll start a new thread for my problem, then. It honestly does look identical, but apparently, it isn't. Have a wonderful weekend!

Yeah, I'm kind of embarrassed I didn't find that bug report before

I solved the problem on my system. I know this doesn't make sense, but although setting MAKEOPTS="-j1" in /etc/portage/make.conf did not solve my problem, specifying MAKEOPTS="-j1" on the command did the trick:

Code:
# MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge gdk-pixbuf

Maybe I forgot to save the edited make.conf during my previous attempts, but I really don't think so.
