Hi!

First, I think I should explain what I am trying to do. I'm trying to build a Virtual Machine in VMWare Player 6.0.1 with a Gentoo Linux in it. My purpose is to have a Desktop environtment with a eclipse installed to do little developments and practise with android. I want to do it in a VM so I can have it unaltered nevertheless the machine and configuration I want (my PC is for gaming and I need Windows for the games that I wish to play). Currently my host system is a Windows 8.

I've managed to install the gentoo until the point of configuring the xorg server. I'm at a point that everything's compiled but when I start KDM, I cannot control it. The mouse and the keyboard doesn't work. I've installed open-vm-tools. But when I try to start it I have the following message:

Code:
vmgentoo xorg.conf.d # /etc/init.d/vmware-tools start
 * Loading vmblock module ...
modprobe: FATAL: Module vmblock not found.                                                                                                                                                               [ !! ]
 * Mounting vmblock device ...
mount: mount point /proc/fs/vmblock/mountPoint does not exist                                                                                                                                            [ !! ]
 * Starting vmtoolsd ...

I don't know if this is a problem or how I can solve it. There is no vmblock package on the portage or anything related I could found.

I don't know if it's a problem of VMWare player, my poor hability (it's been years since my last gentoo install) to configure the xorg server and evdev or anything else.

I searched the forums for an answer and the Internet also, without luck. I hope this thread isn't duplicated. If it is, I'm sorry :(

I will put some info here. If you need anything else, please, ask.

I am having a similar problem. Except my problem is a lot simpler because I'm not running in a vm-environment. Here is my post https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-974212-highlight-keyboard.html. if you find a solution please let me know.

Inside the vmware image:
Code:
cat /proc/cpuinfo

Is this only an image, or can you modify it with VMWARE :?:

I created the virtual machine myself from scratch, so I think my answer is: no, it's not an image. But I don't understand what you mean by "image" :oops:

When I created the vm, I specified to only use one core.

Did you realize your input sections in xorg.conf are commented out :?:

Code:
#Section "InputDevice"
#Identifier "Mouse[0]"
#Driver "vmmouse"
#Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
#Option "Name" "VMware Pointing Device"
#EndSection

#Section "InputDevice"
#Identifier "Keyboard0"
#Driver "evdev"
#Option "Name" "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
#EndSection
<snip>

Your Server layout is Commented too:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "X.org Configured"
        Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0
        #InputDevice "Evdev Mouse" "CorePointer"
        #InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
        #InputDevice "Mouse[0]" "CorePointer"
EndSection

Your Server Layout never activates your mouse because the #'s causes them to be skipped.

They're deactivated because they didn't work. When I enable them, xorg.log tells me that "autoplug" is enable and then disables the mouse configured at xorg.conf.

Regardless, your server layout cant activate a vmware mouse if the line that activates it is commented out. See this over at Arch: Installing Arch Linux in VMware.

Quote:
Trouble shooting

Mouse not working as expected
There is an issue with mouse input when running X11 in a VMware host. If you experience one or more of the following:
the automatic grab/ungrab feature of VMware will not automatically grab input when the cursor enters the window
mouse input lag
mouse clicks are not registered in some programs
You may need to disable the catch-all evdev driver in X11: edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf and comment out the section with the identifier evdev pointer catchall [xf86-input-vmmouse does not work expected].

catches my attention.

I'll try to deactivate the evdev pointer and see if it works.

Thanks!
