I don't know if any of you knows the game, that has been in development for ca. 6 years and in open beta since January. Nevertheless, it's released today, starting in a little more than one hour.

It's an aRPG a bit like Diablo, but with a unique setting and unparalleled (afaik) skill system.
You're an exile, banished to the unwelcoming continent of Wraeclast and as these games go, have to slay hordes of monsters and do stuff for the villagers. Of course you have the usual weapons at and armour at your disposal (- xbows, -polearms), with a slight twist: Armour provides armour, energy shield and evasion in varying degrees (one or two out of those 3), making you either resistant to damage (armour), absorbing damage (energy shield) or letting you avoid damage (evasion).
Skills are provided by gems, which you can insert into sockets on you weapons and armour. These skills can further be supported by support skills, which have to be put into sockets that are linked to the one where the skill sits you want to support.
As you slay enemies, you gain experience (what a novel idea :D), and so do you skill gems, becoming more powerful.
As you level up, you gain passive skill points, which are more like stat points in Diablo (I and II) - there's a huge skill tree and depending on your character class, you'll have some of the passive skills nearer or farther away, causing you to invest more or less points to reach a desired goal.

The best part: It is free to play with a very interesting business model. You can access all content, skills and whatever else is necessary to beat/ enjoy the game. The only things for sale are either vanity stuff, such as weapon effects, pets, helmet effects and suchlike or additional character slots (default in open beta was 15 I think, which is more than Diablo III offered).

If you're curious, take a look at
www.pathofexile.com

Beware, the game servers are running hot delivering the release and the site is a bit sluggish at the moment.

Looks cool. No download? An online only game? Seems like performance could be an issue. I'm also tired of everyone and their brother requiring a login/password.

There is a download. It's online only, though, no offline mode. But the client runs on your machine.
You can also get it via Steam.

Ah, OK. I didn't see any download links. Maybe they'll eventually get an offline mode.

No, but they have a duelist. Probably not what you had in mind :D

Actually, the classes seem... notable for what they aren't: Marauder, Ranger, Witch, Duelist, Templar, Shadow and Scion. Hmm.

Classes are strange in that game because of the amazing skill tree. You can drift from your starting point into any direction you wish.

Nothing would prevent that with standard names. I'm not saying it is bad, just confusing. I guess they kept with Ranger because Tree Hugger was too limiting :D

The classes in this game are not the typical heroes you find in Diablo (actually, Barbarians are not that heroic originally, but ever since Conan that might have changed).
They are all rather shady - with the exception of the Templar and perhaps the Duelist.

I played it for a short bit when the open beta started, combination of my laptop not quite being up to the task and getting incredibly bored with it I stopped playing. I'm thinking you need to put in a bit of effort to get hooked on it.
